INCREASE IN RAILWAY FARES. To-morrow the increased railway fares will come into force. There is no in crease in suburban fares, therefore the ordinary first and second class fares on the Lyttelton line will remain as at present. Workers' weekly tickets have been increased from 2s 3d to 3s 3d, and season tickets will also cost more. Fifty trip bearer tickets must be used within six months, and -- rip within three months. Cricket. The Lyttelton Miniature Rifles Cricket Club will open the season with a match at Officers' Point this afternoon The Mayor (Mr W. T. Foster) will declare the season open. Bowling. Cycling Club. ] The recent popularity of cycle-racing ! in Lyttelton had its sequence at a meeting of those interested on Thursday night of the Lyttelton Cycling Club. The following officers were elected: — President, Mr J. Hughes; secretary, Mr A. K. Mutton; treasurer, Mr F. Hart; auditor, Mr A. Steele; club captain (junior), Mr F. Hart; juvenile, Master J. Hughes, jun.; handicappers, timers, and starters, Messrs A. B. Mutton, J. Hughes, and Butcher. Yesterday's Holiday. Although a strong north-easterly wind prevailed at Lyttelton yesterday a crowd of quite 2000 travelled to port by rail to spend the day at the various beaches. There -were several large picnics, including the East Belt Methodist Church, 200, the Christchurch Y.W.C.A. 30, the Sydenham Baptist Choir 100, Christchurch Oddfellows 200. The beaches at both Corsair Bay and Diamond Harbour, sheltered as they are from the prevailing wind, offered ideal locations for the excursionists, and a number also visited Charteris Bay. Sailing. The Canterbury Yacht and Motorboat Club will hold two races this afternoon, a trial race for Takapuna class boats, abd an open race. Special interest attaches to the open event, as Mr F. Dobby's new fourteen-footer Irene will be an entrant. Irene was christened and launched earlier in the week, and made her first appearance under canvas yesterday. Although a strong north-easterly was blowing, causing two keel yachts which were out to reef down a point or two, Irene carried full sail, and accompanied by Usher, put in some good Work in mid-harbour. S. Tooiney handled the new boat 's tiller,, and'lrene's performance, under trying •conditions, was well up to expectations.
