The Railway Unions are preparing counter-proposals. The railway companies also propose that payment shall only be made for time actually worked. The standard hours inclucfe Sunday duty work in excess to be paid for at the rnte of time and a quarter. . The companies cite the competition of other forms' of transport and the high operative costs. The wages bill was £47,000,000 in 1913, and £115,000,000 in 1929. The traffio receipts m 1930 will probably bo £10,500.000 below 1929.
