RELIEF WORK CLOSING DOWN.
LEWIS PASS ROAD. Advice was received in Christchurch yesterday that the men engaged on the construction of the Canterbury section of the Lewis Pass road bad received notice, and tho work would be closed down immediately. Over 100 labourers are affected, the number employed having been considerably larger until the commencement of the diversion of the Acheron river at Lake Coleridge, when some of them wore transferred therer Work has been proceeding on the road for nearly a year, and there was a vote totalling several thousands of pounds for further construction on this year's Public Works Estimates. MEETING OF PROTEST. ■ « (SPECX.VL TO THH t'BKSS.) GREYMOUTH, November 13. The Public Works Department has advised the Inangahua County Council that work on the Lewis Pass road, on which there are thirty men employed at the Marina end, has been suspended and operations will cease on Wednesday A public meeting is being held this evening at tteefton to urge that tlie work be continued owing to the unemployment in the district, where miners _aro -working short time.
