ST HELENS HOSPITALS.

EXPENSES EXCEED INCOME.

(PBE3S' ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)

" AUCKLAND, November 13. ■ .The fact that Sfc. Helens Hospital, Auckland, is full and booked up for two months ahead, led to much criticism to which a reply is made by the >linister for Health (the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy), who said that it had never been ihe function of St. Helens to provide accommodation for all maternity cases, and it was unreasonable to suggest that there was any failure by the Department, because more cases were now offering than the Jiome was designed to accommodate. The excess expenditure over income in 1930 in the seven St. Helena Hospitals totalled £31,490. The net cost for each patient was as follows: £ s. d. • i Auckland 10 18 0 Christchurch ... 518 0 Dunedin ... ... 11 0 0 j Gisborne ... ... 11 4 0 | Jnveroargill ... 11 0 0- • Wanganui 13 4 0 Wellington ... ... 816 0 Average "... 916 0 Mr Stallworthy added that it was generally admitted by Hospital Boards that provision for maternity cases was their function, and a number of maternity. hospitals was being administered by Boards with excellent results.
