BOOKMAKER BEFORE COURT. llItEiS ASSOCIATION TILEQRAM.) WELLINGTON, November 12. Arrested at noon to-day, George Frederick Leney, aged 38, was fined £2OO by Mr E. Page, S.M., on a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Detective-Sergeant Holmes said accused had been carrying on business in a substantial way. Betting books found on him contained approximately 150 and 100 entries respectively. They mostly related to bets on races which started in Christcliurcli on Saturday and ranged from os to £l. Mr Page: You have had two previous convictions for keeping a common gaming house and the fine j. will now have to impose will have to bo fairly substantial. Defendant was given until December 3rd to find the money. Default was fixed at six months' imprisonment.
