MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
A short sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held yesterday, when Messrs R. Clark and J. W. Bowden, J.P.'s, presided. George Keeley, a labourer, aged 52, was charged with stealing a quantity of chaff and oats worth os, the property of James R. Reeves, and with stealing a quantity of chaff to the same value, the property of the same person. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Senior-Sergeant H. Martin said that Reeves bad missed chaff and oats for some time and had complained to the police. A constable had kept watch and had seen the accused help himself from the bags in the sheds. The police had reason to believe that accused had taken horse feed on previous occasions. Accused was fined £2 in default seven days' imprisonment. He was given one month in which to pay the fine. On the second charge lie was convicted and discharged. For riding a bicycle on the footpath James Kennedy was lined 10s and costs. Fishing. Not many fish have been landed from either the Rangitata or Rakaia rivers during the last few days, although quite a number of herrings and cod were taken from the sea at the mouths of both rivers. Better results were obtained in the Ashburton river, two anglers catching five and seven trout respectively, the heaviest being 31b. Both commented upon the excellent condition of the fish which offered plenty of resistance before being landed. A j number of sea fish were also landed at j the mouth of this river. ! Ashburton Presbytery. The Ashburton Presbytery met yesterday, when the Moderator, the Rev. A. G. Irvine, presided. ] It was decided to recommend tbat all j Home Missionaries be kept in their present charges another year. The Rev. G. Budd, secretary to the isory Board, wrote notifying that amount required for schemes of the (. a uich during next year was £37,500, and that the Presbytery's quota was £776. It was resolved fo assess congregations at thi- rate of 14s 6d per member. The Rev. JJ. G. Vercoe addressed the meeting on the aims of the New Zealand Alliance and thanked the Presbytery for permission to speak to the Bible Classes on Prohibition. It was decided to request the Home Missionary Committee to make the following grants for the ensuing year:— Mayficld £ls, Wakanui £25, Hinds £3O, Tinwald-Flemington £4O, Springburn £7O. The Rev. A. D. Kirkland reported that the Bible Class rally held at Mayfield on Labour Day was most successful, abj>ut 90 being present. At the conclusion of business the members were entertained at luncheon by the ladies of the Presbyterial Association. ir.A.O.D. Lodge. The fortnightly meeting of the Star of Ashburton Lodge. U.A.O. Druids, No. i 14, was held in the Masonic Hall on Monday evening, Bro. S. L. Hawke, i A.D., presiding. A number of Sisters of the Success of Ashburton Ladies' Lodge were also present, the occasion being the official visit from the Grand Lodge officers from the Grand Lodge of Canterbury. An invitation to attend the jubilee social of the Anchor Lodge was received, and it was left to the A.D. to obtain a representative to be present. Invitations were received from the Lily of Temuka and Timaru Lodges to attend installation night on December Ist, and a meeting of the Grand Lodge officers of the Canterbury and Otago and Southland Grand Lodges at Timaru on November 15th.
After the business of the lodge had ' been completed the Grand President, * Bro. CPDonoghue, P.G.P., Bro. Morrison, V.G.P., Bro. Chittock, and Bros. Parker, 11 Freeman, and Denison, members of the ' Board of Management, were welcomed. * P.D.P., Bro. Busliton, from the Timaru * Lodge, and D.P., Bro. Fisher, of No. 5 4 District, were also in attend ante. 1 Bro. Hawke welcomed the visitors who wore received with musical honours and interesting and instructive addresses were given* by these brothers on 1 the working of Grand Lodge and the ' activities of the Board of Management. | After the lodge was closed a social evening was spent, at which several ' toasts were proposed and an enjoyable evening was brought to a close with a short dance. Personal. Reference was made to the serious illness of Lieutenant W. H. Osborne, of Timaru, formerly bandmaster at Ashburton, at ths meeting of the Citizens' Committee of the Ashburton Band on Monday evening, and it was decided to send him a letter of sympathy expressing a wish for his speedy recovery. Dr. Phillipps, of the Education Department, is at present visiting Borough School, where he is examining the children. MAYFIELD. The monthly meeting of the general committee of the A. and P. Association was held in the Band Hall on Monday evening, the president, Mr J. A. Fleming, presiding over a large attendance. Correspondence was received from Ihe Instructor in Agriculture, Mr E. M. Bates, notifying that he would be pleased to judge the field root section at the next show, and would also give a short lecture on field roots. The Board of Agriculture wrote with reference to the importation of stock. In view of the further outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease, no lifting of the embargo would be considered. A large number of replies were received from business firms, notifying the amounts they were giving to' the prize fund. A quotation was received for poultry pens, but in view of the
