DAIRY BOARD.
GOVERNMENT AND TRADE REPRESENTATIVES. DEMAND FOB ELIMINATION. - (MtE JS ISSOCUPOS - TEI/BaBllI.) WELLINGTON, Juno 17. The New Zealand Farmers' Union, by a large majority, decided to-day that Government and trade nominees should be eliminated from the Dairy Control Board, one member i expressing the opinion that the commercial representatives were the ones who had tried to wreck the Board.
Mr C. E. 8. Gane moved an Auekland remit: "That the Government and trade representatives be eliminated from the Dairy Control Board, the Government having no special interest to conserve, while tlie present method of election more than safeguarded the proprietary interests." It 'was desired, Mr Ga.ne said,- to reduce the Board to nine in number, and they should all be producers. Mr N. Cameron (Kaawhata) moved an amendment: "That the Government be urged to nominate representatives who were men of wide experience and training, with a thorough knowledge of the • export business." Mr F. Waite, M.P. (Balclutha), expressed the view that the men who tried to wreck the Control Board were the commercial men, who had vested interests. ~ . Mr E. H. Feist contended that the work being done by the Board could well bo carried out by the National Dairy Association, and on some future occasion the commercial representatives might be able to use that Board to attain their ends. It was delaying the voluntary efforts they should bo making to overcome tho unsatisfactory market conditions with Which they were faced. Thore was no reason why thoso outsidd men should be there except as political smashers. The chairman suggested that the conference would do well not to pursue the matter further, as it was possible they might endanger the whole thing. "Were they a lot of cocktails that they were afraid to go out for what they wanted!" asked a member. "They should go to members of Parliament and get the amendment they wanted." The amendment was defeated on the voices - and tho remit was carried.
