TIMARU. LORRY HITS TRAIN. As tho slow train from Oamaru w pulling up at the Timaru railway station at 10.30 o'eloek yesterday morning a lorry, driven by Mr P. <*• Giles, of the Timaru Transport Company, stalled on the Strathallan street erosaing, and the train ran into the lorry. The train was a long one, and the engine of the lorry stopped about halfway over the crossing. The driver thought he could clear the I'Re safely, but the lorry was hit by the engine of the train, which was moving very slowly at the time. The lamps of the lorry were broken and the axle and mudguard were slightly bent, but the lorry was able to proceed under its own power. The driver escaped injury.
British Team's Visit. The South Canterbury Rugby Union has finalised its arrangements in connexion with the visit of the British team. The gates will be opened on the day of the match at 10.80, two cur-tain-raisers will be played—a fourth grade competition game, and a match between two primary schools' teams. The British's team's programme during its visit to Timaru will be as follows; — Civic reception on arrival, Thursday afternoon; Thursday evening, pictures; Friday morning, practice; Friday afternoon, motor drive to Mr J. F. K. Jamieson 'sj free night; Saturday evening, dinner at the Grosvenor Hotel, 6.45, and cabaret in the Bay Hall. Funeral. The funeral of Mr E. B. Guinness, who died in Timaru on Saturday last, took . place yesterday afternoon. The esteem in which Mr Guinness was held in the community in which he played so prominent a part in tho early days was attested by the large number of public bodies represented, and the prominent citizens present at the funeral. The Bev. H. W. Monaghan, of St. Mary's Church, officiated at the service at the residence and at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs C. E. Shallcrass, J. Bohm, F. H. King, W, Foster, and E. Beckingham, of Timaru, m 4 Donald Mac Donald, of Qttaldine. Among those present were Messrs Rowland Guinness, J. C, Guin nets (Ealing), 0. S. Hammond, D. Boyle. Hospital Board. -The monthly meeting cfthe Fcuth Jfospital Board was WW yesterday afternoon, the ehairman (Mr B, Maedonald) presiding. Preßenri Mrs J4. E. Tilbrook, and Messrs Q. Pagh.W.Geddes, J. T. Hay, (5. P. > Selbie, B. B. Macdonald, B. S. Griffiths, M. n, MoLeod, and G. Saunders. The ehafttoan a 8 unanimously elected to that office tor a further two years. The chairman also referred u> the loss the community had - Buffered in the death of ¥r E, R. Guinness, who had taken, part in the public life of the community during practically the whole of hiß lifetime. A motion of condolence with the relatives wa» carried in silence. U- A.. Valintine, Director-Gen-eral of Health, wrote accepting the Invitation to be present at the opening of the Tepuka Maternity Hospital, and willingness to perform the opening ceremony if the Minister for Health (Hon. A. J, Stallwarthy, was upnbla to he present. Mr Bernard Kennedy wrote expressing thanks to the staff of the Timaru |ff#P4tal for treatment whilst a patient. The chftiwan and members expressed satisfaction with such a letter. The hospital superintendent (Dr. «• C McKewue) reported that 833 patients had been treated during May, 128 hart been discharged, and ICS remained. The average daily occupied beds numbered 102.8, compared with wl-1 * u May, 1929. Of the 188 disehwgad, 88 were cured, 31 relieved, 3 unre-« tteved, and 13 had died. The Director-General of Health wrote approving the Board estimates for the forthcoming financial year. It was decided that steps pa taken to float a loan of £IO,OOO, bowg part of the Seard'# £47,000 loan for the building scheme.
HILTON. At the weekly meeting of the Hilton Miniature Rifle Club there was a competition for a trophy given by Mr J. M. Stickinga, Winchester, This was won by M. Leary, with 80 off the rifle.
