ANNUAL MEETING. [TBS »**■■ lyeeial Serrtee] AUCKLAND. November 14. The tbjrd annuel meeting of the Checker Taxi-cab Company, Ltd., was held to-day. The acting-chairman of directors., Mr C. Rhodes, presided. Mr Rhodes said the balance-sheet disclosed • loss for the year of *32BT, which included .£3814 written off iu depreciation. The rate w«r had been continued, and the •'cutthroat" competition in business persisted up to that moment, although there were signs »f abatement. At least one company was operating under a different system then hitherto, but the Checker Company was stilt faced with competition in a charge of 2s for five miles, at which no concern eould make money. "Under those cireumstancee shareholders can hardly have great dissatisfaction with the results of the year," Mr Rhodes said. The loss was no* an great as it appeared, and a balanee-aheet might nave been presented without allowance for depreciation. The directors, however, considered it batter to show the position as it really was, although there were items that under the aystem by which the company «aa operating might not be regarded as assess, such as goodwill and prepaid expenses. These were offset by the amount that had been written off in depreciation during the last three, years, and the company's eapital was tntaet in vehicles, sundry debtors, and eash in hand. New that tbey appeared to have embarked upon a period when "cut-throat" competition was past, he eould see no reasonable excuse why the company should not go ahead and make profits. He believed be eould safely say that in subsequent years the company shares would stand at about their par value. SYDNEY SALES. (Received November 14th, 9.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, November 14.
