CITY'S MEMORIAL.
RIVERSIDE BOULEVARD. FIRST GIFT MADE. Through the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer), Mr R. B. Owen was 'able to announce yesterday the first gift of land in connexion with the riverside boulevard scheme, which was adopted at. Thursday night's public meeting as the form the City's memorial to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the' establishment of the municipality should take.
The gift has been made by Mr W. Bassett, of Avonside, and the area is nearly half an acre, and 'is on the north-east bank of the Avon, between Swann's road bridge and Bassett'b reach; it is almost opposite the end of Bracken street. The area will be transferred to the City for road purposes. ' The Mayor' s Comment.
'.'Now that a public meeting, . has reached a. majority decision," the Mayor said yesterday to a reporter, "I trust that the citizens will fall into line and unitedly and generously support the scheme.. The meeting seemed to assent to my suggestion that whichever scheme was selected would be supported. At the close of the meeting Mr McGregor .Wright very magnanimously said that he would do his utmost to act upon that understanding and get his friends to do so. "The gift presented to the City, through Mr Owen this morning, is an indication of the fact that already the minds of the citizens are moving in this direction, and I trust that this first gift is the forerunner of many more that will come to hand."
Energetic Campaign to be Launched. It is rot intended to, lose any time in launching an energetic appeal for funds in support of the riverside boulevard scheme. A meeting of the Memorial Committee, in connexion with the City's Jubilee celebrations will be held as soon' as possible, to take into consideration the best me&ns to bo adopted to give effect to- the wishes of the citizens as expressed at Thursday night's meeting. Already the supporters of the scheme have received warm congratulations on its acceptance as the City's memorial.
