INVERCAIRGILL. (SPECIAL TO THI PEEBS.) INVEROARGILL, December 9. Business in the fruit marts during the past week has been brisk. . The small fruits are now coming to hand in full supplies, cherries and strawberries in particnlar. Values, however, have been much lower than those ruling in the north, and consequently supplies aro expected to ease. The s.s. Waipiata brought a large shipment of Fiji bananas, a big proportion of the fruit showing ripe, and as this will be the final shipment far Christmas trade, the green samples that will keep are certain to be keenly sought after. The parcel of pines expected by the same boat did not come to hand, as their condition was too ripo. A small parcel of Californian Valencias arrived during the week, and met with a keen demand. This will probably be the Inst lot of oranges before Christmas, as doubt is expressed if the navels which are arriving in New Zealand on tho eve of the festive season will reach this market in time for distribution. Tomatoes continue to arrive in large quantities. and prices are steadily dropping. New Zealand apples are now finished, but Canadians are still available, and selling well. Lettuce and Bpring cabbage are meeting with a flrst-class demand. Current prices for the week are approximately as follows: Strawberries Is to Is 3d per pottle; cherries 6d to Is 2d a lb; tomatoes, first grade to lg 4d a lb; bananas, prime green to 37s 6d a case, repacked ripe to 40s; Valencia oranges to 60s; California lemons to 70s; grapes to 40s a keg; Canadian apples 25s to 27s 6d; green peas to 5d a lb; new potatoes to 3Jd;' cabbages to 5s 6d a doz; lettuce 4s. ~~~(QpNTJNUBD ON PAGE 16.)~
