LYTTELTON HARBOUR BOARD.

JUBILEE ARRANGEMENTS. The prizes won at the regatta at Lyttelton on the 17th inst., to be held in connexion with the jubilee of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, will be presented by the chairman (Mr E. Galbraith) in the Lyttelton Club Hall the same evening. The railway authorities do not intend to put on special trains in connexion with the regatta, but will have available extra accommodation on the timetable trains—l2.lo p.m. and 1.5 p.m. — should such be necessary. The Essay Competition. In accordance with the recommendations of the Jubilee Celebrations Committee of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, the school pupils' essay competition has been postponed to the middle of March, as the present month (December) is inopportune owing to examinations being held. The essays are to be written in school hours by pupils in Standard VI. in the primary schools within the Harbour Board's representation area, under the supervision of the head teacher; no notes or assistance to be allowed The head teacher of each school competing is to select up to the six best essays and send them to the Board; Messrs G. Lancaster und C. T. Aschman have agreed to act as judges Instead of cash prizes, or trophies, suitable certificates are to be given to each competing school. As an essay embracing historical, geographical, and commercial features of the port and harbour would be too heavy for primary schools, the competition is to be open to secondary schools within the Board's representation area for pupils of both sexes, over and under 15 years of age. The prizes will be:—First £2 2s; second, £1 Is; and third, 10s 6d; with merit awards asgregating £2 at the discretion of the judges. The essay is to be written at one sitting in school hours; one hour and a half is to be allowed to write it.
