COUNTY COUNCILS.
_« HEATHCOTE. The Hoathcote County Council mot last night. Present: Crs. G. Flavell (chairman), J. L. Danks, W. Scarff, W. Kerr, J. H. Moore, R. Riley, and J. F. Scott. ' It was decided to add 10 per cent, on all rates unpaid after January 16th. Wainom road is to be closed to all through heavy traffic under section 11 of the Publio Works Act, 1910, until further notice. , . ,
It was decided to close Thorrington road to all heavy traffic botween Colombo street and Cashmere road until further notice. The county fund showed a debit balance of £1769 12s 2d. Of the rates levied amounting to £16,162, only £lO7l had been paid. Correspondence was received from tho Public Works Department regarding earth tests, and advising that the cradles on the 11,000 volt line at Heathcote Valley may be dismantled.
A letter from the City Council was received advising that the county ranger had teen given permission to impound cattle on boundary roads. An application for a grant towards the OEtertainment of the children at the freshair school at the Sanatorium was received. It was decided to vote £2 2s.
A letter was read from Mr H. N. Stokes, of St. Martin's road, drawing attention to the disgraceful state of Buxton terrace and St. Martin's road. The letter stated that the footpaths were an absolute disgrace, and considering the high rates it was about; time \he roads were put in decent order.
The chairman. Is it as bad as that? Cr. Scott replied that everything had been fixed up. Permission was granted to Mr F. C. Terras to remove % workshop from Bletsoc avenue to Page's road. The Vacuum Oil Company wrote on behalf of Mr Bettle, of Heathcote Valley, applying for permission to erect a kerb pump for the sale of petrol, the tank to be installed on his own property. Permission was granted. The county clerk reported that he had made enquiries in reference to the connecting up of houses with electricity, and found that the M.E.D used only one meter for the stove, water heater and radiator. Ho suggested that the Council follow the same scheme. He also suggested that the electrician remove all water-heating meters now on switchboards at Cashmere.
Tho county inspector reported that work was proceeding on the sewer fat Cashmere. All the road staff were employed on Upper Dyer's Pass road from the Kiwi to the tram terminus, cleaning water tables, patching, and filling up ruta. Four chains of Wainoni road had been scarified, graded, and rolled. Thirty-three and a quarter chains had been tar-sealed, completing the whole length from Kerr's road to the Bower bridge. The cost amounted to £l6O, averaging 9Jd per square yard.
