LICENSING COMMITTEE. | (9PBCIA.L tO THT rBESS.) GREYMOUTH, December S. The quarterly meeting of the Westland Licensing Committee was held at Hokitika to-day. Present: Messrs W. Meldrum, S.M. (chairman), F. McGregor, J. Kyle, J. B. Kent, and J. Goodall. With reference to the adjourned application of T. Lloyd for a renewal of the license of the Imperial Hotel, Greymouth, the chairman said the promised improvements had not been carried out. It was decided to adjourn the sitting to December 17th, at Greymouth, when the committee would inspect the building and decide on a course of action. The following applications were granted—Commercial Hotel, Hokitika, J. L. Fowler; Junction Hotel, Dillmans, transfer from S. Rowe to Edith Morgan; Revington's Hotel, Greymouth, transfer from J. D. Wingham to J. D. Dore; Ngahere Hotel, Ngahere, transfer from L. Curtain (executrix) to Wni. Holt; Railway Hotel, Ngahere, transfer from T. J. Furlong to J. H. Campbell. The chairman referred to the recent death of a fellow member, Mr C. J. Nightingale, and it was resolved that a letter be sent to Mrs Nightingale expressing appreciation of the valuable services rendered by deceased, and the committee's sincere regret at his death, and sympathy with the relatives. Personal. Mr E. Ducre Dunn (Westport) left to-day for Christchurch to attend the funeral of his cousin, the lato Mr It. H. Richmond. Mr J. A. C. Bayne, Chief Inspector of Mines, has made a good recovery from his recent motoring accident, and is spending a few days in Greymouth. Mr W. Petherbridge, of Hamilton, formerly of Cobdcn, arrived this afternoon on a holiday visit to Greymouth. Mr Bert Quinn, of the staff of Messrs G. Schacf aud Company, returned today from a holiday trip to the North Island. Misses D. and M. Inwood (Cashmere Hills), who have been spending a holiday at Otira, returned to Christchurch by to-day's express. Miss N. Deerc arrived from Sydney this afternoon on a visit to her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Deerc, Herbert street. Mr A. Taylor, of Grassmere station, Cass, who has been in indifferent health, is now making a good recovery. Among the passengers who arrived from Christchurch by to-day's express were Mesdames C. MeKcchnie, F. Forrest, and W. Jackson. Mr E. Adkins, railway coaching foreman, left to-day for Christchurch on account of the death of a felativc. Mr J. Smeaton, Mayor of Brunnerton, who recently underwent an operation at the Grey Hospital, is making a good recovery. Sister J. Todd, of the Donedin Hospital, arrived this afternoon on a visit to the Coast. Mr G. Tripner, recently of Butler Bros., Ltd. (Ruatapu), and Mr W. Perry (Hokitika) left to-day for Christchurch. Mr Edgar King, of the Westport railway traffic staff, was presented with a tea-set by the staff on the occasion of liis recent marriage to Miss Madge Bentley. The death occurred at the Westport Hospital yesterday of Mrs Jane Anderson, at the ago of 79 years. Deceased

was a native of Scotland, and came to New Zealand about -G years ago. Her husband predeceased her many years ago in Scotland. Coalmining. Owing to the shortage of shipping facilities, the bins at the Blackball mine were full yesterday afternoon, with a result that the mine ceased operations until Monday next. The Liverpool State mine was idle to-day through a similar cause.. The James mine was working to-day. With the repeated stoppages of the coalmines, the prolonged timber slump, and the consequent diminution in spending power, business people are finding trade uuusually quiet, but arc expecting business to brighten up as the Christmas season draws closer. Otira. Under the bright sunshine prevailing to-day, the bush and mountain scenery, was looking at its very very at Otira and Arthur's Pass. The higher peaks are still capped with a light mantle of snow, which is gradually disappearing under the heat of the summer sun. The holiday season at both resorts this year promises to be a very busy one, the whole of the available hut accommodation having been booked up for the Christmas holidays. A very successful concert was held at the Otira Railway Hall last evening in aid of the funds of the school picnic to be held at Poerua next Saturday. i Jubilee Reunion Dinner. The Gre'y Returned Soldiers' Association has decided to hold a reunion dinner during the Grey District Jubilee Week in February next. It is hoped that tho Govenor-General (Sir Charles Fergusson) will preside at the reunion, and that tho Prime Minister (Mr J. G. Coates) will also be present. A meeting of the Association will bo held on Thursday next to make final arrangements for the reunion. A. and P. Association. A valuable silver cup has been presented by Mr E. P. Hudson, M.P., to tho Inangahua A. and P. Association. The Association has not yet decided to which class tho trophy shall be allotted for competition. Blackball Miners' Hall. The new Miners' Hall at Blackball, which is nearing completion, will be opened to-morrow evening. The building, when completed, will cost about £2500, and will be fitted with all the requirements of a modern placo of entertainment.
