PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE.
ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury was held last evening, the president, Mr R. M. Laing, in the chair. The annual report stated that the membership of the Institute stood at 214 • . -J w A sum had again been set aside by the Government for distribution in research grants. During the year grants were made through the Institute to the following:—Dr. F. W. Hilgendorf, for the purchase of a calculating machine for the correlation of data m. connexion with agricultural experimental work; Mr E. W. Bennett, for investigation to be made under the direction of Dr. Chilton on the food supply of marine fish; Mr G. Jobberns, for investigation of coastal uplift on tho north-east coast of the South Island. The Hutton medal was awarded to Dr. Charles Chilton, for his researches in zoology, and the Hector medal to Mr H. D. Skinner, of Dunedin, for his researches in ethnology. The report was adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted: —President, Professor R Speight; vice-presidents, Messrs G. Jobberns and R. M. Laing; hon. secretary, Mr E. W. Bennett; hon. treasurer, Mr A. M. Wright; hon. librarian, Mr S. J. H. Sylvester; council, Miss M. Herriott, Dr. R. R. D. Milligan. Dr. F. W. Hilgendorf, Dr. C. Coleridge Farr, Messrs C. E. Foweraker, and R. O. Page; representatives on Board of Governors of New Zealand Institute, Dr. 0. C. Farr and Mr A. M. Wright; representatives on Board of Trustees, Riccarfcon Bush, Mr C/E. Foweraker; representatives on Council of the Australian Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. H. G. Denham and Professor A. H. Tocker; hon. auditor, Mr J. 0. JameI son.
