CHILTON'S DEPARTURE.
ENTERTAINED BY PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE.
The Philosophical Institute of Canterbury tendered a complimentary luncheon to Dr. and Mrs C. Chilton at Ballantynes to-day. The president, Mr R. M. Laing, in bidding farewell to Dr. and Mrs Chilton on behalf of the Institute, referred to the long period during which Dr Chilton had been associated with the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury —a period of 47 years. He referred to the excellent and far-reaching work that Dr. Chilton had done for the Institute in various official capacities, as president, as vice-president, as sec-' retary, and as treasurer, which 'atter position he had occupied for the past twelve years. On behalf of the Institute he wished Dr. and Mrs Chilton great prosperity in their future home in Nelson.
Dr. Chilton, in replying, thanked the Institute, for ths honour they had done him and laid special emphasis on ono of the main functions of tho Institute, namely, the encouragement of young scientific workers'to carry' on their research and to place their results before the scientific world. Appreciation of the work of Dr. Chilton for the Institute during the past forty-six years was placed on record at last night's meeting of the Canterbury Philosophical Institute. Dr. F. W. Hilgendorf, Messrs A. Page, G. Jobberns, R. Nairn, J. W. Jamieson, and E. W. Bennett were the speakers. Mr R. M. Laing (president), on behalf 'of the Institute, presented Dr. Chilton with a portable typewriter. Dr. Chilton suitably replied. j PARTY AT "RIVERLAW." j i i _ A "coin afternoon" in aid of the Opawa branch of the British Sailors' Society. was held at the Hon. G. J. Smith's residence, "Riverlaw," on Tuesday afternoon. A large number of Guild members, including Mrs Thacker, president Christchurch Guild,, and Mrs Bishop, president New Brighton Guild 'with their many friends spent a delightful afternoon in the beautiful grounds where tennis, archery, and other games were enjoyed. Delicious afternoon tea and strawberries and cream were dispensed during the afternoon, and the music of Margaret Middleton's Orchestra greatly added to the pleasure of the gathering. By the generosity of those present and the kindness and hospitality extended to all by the president, Mrs G. J. Smith the good cause will benefit considerably. • SUDAN MISSION. The annual meeting of the Women's Auxiliary of the Sudan United Mission took place in St. Paul's Schoolroom on Monday. December otb, at 4 p.m. There were.present:—Miss Agnes Campbell (president) in the chair, and Misses Beck, Evans (2), Sargent, and E. J. McGregor, 1 secretary. The annual report was read and accepted. Members were very grateful to lean) that the finances were much better thaA in former years, the sum of £34 8s having been raised for the mission fund.
Officers elected for the following year were:—Miss .Campbell, president; Miss Beck, treasurer: Miss E. J. McGregor, secretary. Meetings are held on the first Monday of the month in St. Paul's Schoolroom, and the next meeting Trill be held early in February, when the auxiliary will be very pleased to welcome, as members, any friends who are interested in this mission.
A newly-born boy baby has now an expectation of life of about 55j years, compared with 48} years 21 years ago.
