ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. The Hon. Mr Nosworthy, PostmasterGeneral, will arrive in Ashburton today. Ensign G. H. Pratt, of Pctone, and formerly of Ashburton, returned to the North Island last evening, after a visit to Ashburton. Dr. D. E. Hansen, principal of the Christchureh Technical College, will be the chief speaker at the Ashburton Technical School's breaking-up ceremony on December 14th. Dr. A. Kidd, medical superintendent of the Waipiata Sanatorium, visited the Ashburton County Hospital yesterday and examined a number of patients desirous of entering the Sanatorium. He left for the north by the express last evening. W.C.T.U. The Ashburton Branch • of the W;C.T.l T . held its annual meeting in the Baring Square schoolroom, when Mr C. S. Matthews occupied the chair. Votes of sympathy were passed with the relations of Mrs D. McKenzie, Sister Mildred, and Mr and Mrs J. Copland and family in their recent bereavements, also with Mesdames W. H. Robinson, S. Thomas, Tulloeb, and Tinsley. Letters, were received from tho Prime Minister and Mr Nosworthy acknowledging receipt of resolutions from the Union, regarding the Licensing Bill. On behalf of the Gala authorities a lettor was received from the secretary, thanking the "Union for the assistance.it had given at the fete. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopte.d, each showing the Union to be in a satisfactory state. The election of officers was held over until the February meeting. The present, New Zealand officers were nominated for re-election. Motor-Cycling Club. The Committee of the Ashburton Motor-Cycling Club met on Tuesday evening. It,was reported that the recent gymkhana and dance held jointly by the club and the Ashburton Silver Band had resulted in a profit of £2O 17s. The gross income was about £54. It was decided to send a team to Christ church on December 19th to compete at the gymkhana to be held by the Christchurch Club. Mothers' Union. The final meeting for the year of the Mission Branch of the Mothers' Union was held yesterday, Mrs R. Galbraith presiding. The time was spent in doing work for the Indian Mission, after which the meeting adjourned till March, 1928. Sale of Work. A sale of work, organised by the Busy Bees, the junior branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union, was held in St. Andrew's Hall yesterday afternoon and evening, under the supervision of Misses M. Bell and E. Anderson. There was a good attendance of the public and a ready sale was found for the goods displayed. The girls' auxiliary assisted in the evening. The stall-holders were as follows: Work: Gladys Mellraith, Agnes AVardaw, Patty Ward, Jean Copland; variety: Stella Bray, Joan Cookson; flowers: Doris Doherty and younger girls; cakes: Agnes Johnstone, Betty Frisby; sugar-bag and raffia: Betty Opie, Marjory Graham; afternoon tea: Mary Johnstone, Flo Opie, Vilma Anthony, Connie McMillan; fish pond: Bruce McMillan, Ted Doherty, Roy Johnstone; Christmas tree: Enid New, Mona Dyer; side-show: Dolly Boycc, Betty Curric, Lila Hunt. Allenton School Committee. At the last meeting of the Allenton School Committee there were present: Messrs B. Houston (chairman), C. Armstrong, 11. Breach, G. Harris, H. Greaves, J. McElhinney, A. Drayton, W. J. Sparrow, E. C. Bathurst, and the headmaster (Mr W. S. Pratt). The headmaster's report stated that the roll number was 268, and for the quarter just ended 237.5. The annual School concert would be held on December 13th. The nurse in charge of the dental clinic had commenced the treatment of the children. A prize to be known as . the Osborne Memorial had been given by Mrs J. Osborne. On account of the past year's attendance being so much affected by epidemics it was decided to allow the teaching staff to allocate the dux and merit prizM on the result of the last term examinations. The distribution of prizes was set down for December 15th.. Shearing Awards. Tho Director of the Ashburton Technical School (Mr R. J. Thompson) has been notified that the following students of the shearing class have been awarded certificates for ability and attendance:—First diss: Thomas Allwood, Hedley Moses, Tony Svihtt. Second class: W. Lochhead, E. Cartwright, W, Jones. Band Concert. The Ashburton Silver Band, under the baton of Bandmaster 11. J. Osborne, gavo an open-air concert in the Ashburton County Hospital grounds last evening, when there was a fair attendance of the public. The programme was as follows:—March, "The Digger"; selection, "Romeo and Juliet"; euphonium solo, "Gipsy's Warning," Bandsman L. Halls; fox-trot, "All Depends on You"; selection, "Normahurst"; march, "Peace with Victory." A.A.A. The executive of the Advanco Ashburton Association met last evening, Mr W. H. Amos presiding. The Borough Council wrote regretting that it could not reconsider its decision in the matter of a site for the band rotunda. It was agreed to do nothing further in the matter. It was decided to pay the annual subscription to the Chamber of Commerce and appoint Mr A. P. Raven the Association's representative on that body. Mrs F. Collett, of 14 Princess street; Ashburton, wrote stating that on October 29th she tripped over two poles negligently left near the main Coronation gates, breaking her arm, and as a result she was in hospital. She considered she had a claim for compensation.
The president said the Association could not be held liable. It was decided to write a letter of sympathy stating that the Association could not make a grant. A suggestion that the three triangular plots in the Wakanui road should be planted with annuals was received from Mr A. Clark, of Peter street, who offered to supply the plants and maintain one of the plots. The president reported having replied thanking Mr Clark for his offer.
The Beautifying and Works Committee recommend that permission be obtained from the Borough Council to remove the Domain macrocarpa hedge from the Curator's Lodge to Wills street, and also to extend the fence on each side of the pavilion, so as to enclose about half the oval; that the Automobile Association be requested to consider means of minimising the dan-
gcrs to traflic at the junction of Oak Grove and Alford Forest road, the committee being of the opinion that the corner could be rounded off without difficulty. Mr J. S. Laing opposed the removal of the hedge. It was decided to ask the committee to recommend something to replace the fence if removed. The other recommendations were approved. The Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association met last night, Mr E. Buchanan presiding. It was decided to accept the challenge of the Ellesmere Sub-Association to play a representative match at Ashburton on January 14th. The secretary reported that the following entries had been received fot the junior competition, there not being sufficient entries for the senior—Methven (2), Ashburton (2), Te Marae (2), Tinwald (1), and Allenton (1). The opening date for the competition was set down for December 17th. Mr L. R. Clarke moved that the Association call'for entries for a senior progressive doubles tournament, combined or otherwise. Mr C. Pinfold moved an amendment that entries be called for a men's and women's doubles touruament. This was carried, and it was decided that entries restricted to senior player 9 close next Saturday. The secretary reported that no reply had been received from Malvern with regard to the suggested match. A number of entries had been received for the Christmas tournament. The Match Committee was requested to revise the country ladder with a view to having a copy posted to the affiliated c.luba. Bowling. The committee of the Ashburton Bowling Club met last evening, the president, Mr R. Buxton, presiding. Five new members were elected. It was decided to call a special meeting of the Club on Saturday to discuss a change of colours. It was agreed to play a two-bowl pairs competition early in January. An attractive and varied array of bloom was exhibited at tbo annual rose show of the Tinwald Presbyterian Church, staged in the Tinwald llall yesterday afternoon, the whole presenting a very pleasing spectacle. The exhibit staged by Messrs Millichamp Bros, was a valuable adjunct to the show. The championship was awarded to Mr C. H. Milne with a beautiful specimen of Lady Ashton. The arrangements were capably carried out by the secretary (Mr D. McMillan), assisted by Messrs 11. D. Gunn and E. R. Tarbotton. Tho proceeds will be devoted to the church funds. In introducing Mrs Nosworthy, the Rev. W. Marshall said he was very pleased with tho display made by the exhibitors, and the exhibit staged by Millichamp Bros. The finest spirit had been displayed in the organisation of the show, in which connexion he wished to thank the members of the church and the many outsiders who had assisted. Mrs Nosworthy said it was a matter for congratulation that the show had been carried on successfully for three years. A flower show was an ideal way of raising money, and she hoped the object would greatly benefit. She declared the show open. A number of stalls were conducted during the afternoon, those in chargo being: Misses A. Gunn and A. Campbell (sweets), Mesdames D. McMillan and J. Campbell (produce), Mesdames W. Marshall and W. Manning, organising secretary, W.E.A., was in Methven on Tuesday in connexion with preliminary ar-; rangements for tho annual summer camp- . „ ~ , r i The monthly meeting of the Mount Hutt Road Board was held on Tuesday, Present: Messrs F. W. Ruddenklau, who presided, and W. W. Goodwin, R. J. S. Wilson, A. F. Marr, and D. Hampton. The Clerk reported that the Board's men and teams had been engaged in' cutting water channels repairing and shingling roads in the township. Repair work and shingling had been continued on various roads near Lyndhurst. The Clerk, Ashburton Coui/ty Council, wrote in reply to the Board's request for an alteration in the route ot the main highway from Rakaia to Methven that the proposal had been hold over until it was ascertained what additional highways will be declared under the new proposals in connexion with the |>ctrol tax. In reply to the Board's offer to sell Shingle Pit Reserve 1123, the County Council decided not to take any action m the meantime. j The High School Committee made application to tho Board to pay halt the cost of the footpath leading to school property. After discussion was decided to give a reduction of *0 per cent, on the account. It also wrote regarding tho state of Ashburton River road and asked that it receive attention. The Mt. Hutt Dairy Co. also wrote advising that their crcain waggon had been bogged on this road. The Clerk reported that the grader had been at work on the road and it was decided to give further attention as soon as possible. Permission to plough road frontages was granted to Messrs F. Henderson, J. R. Dalton, and W. C. Steffens subject to usual conditions. It was decided to offer the cocksfoot cutting rights at the first stock sale in January. The Under-Secretary, Department of Lands and Survey, forwarded copy of Gazette notice appointing members of the Board as the Methven Domain Board. Mrs James Duff, president of the Methven Croquet Club, was granted permission to hold a sale of work in the pavilion.
The Board then sat as the Cemetery Board. It was decided to secure labour for one month to clean up the cemetery.
RAKAIA. Great interest is being taken in the Rakaia Athletic Club's annual sportsmeeting, to be held 011 Saturday. The meeting this year takes more of the form of a gala day. Many novelty events and side-shows have been in- 1
troduced. The entries are large, in the running and cycling- events, and keen competition is assured. The Ashburton band will be in attendance, and this should be the means of enlivening the proceedings considerably. The cycling and running tracks have been put in order, and are now in first rate condition. Given a fine day the gate should be a record one.
