TOWN V. COUNTRY

COUNTRY, 58 AND 132: TOWN,

350 FOR FOUR

The annual cricket match. Town t. Country, played at Lancaster Park yesterday, did not reveal any promising material from the country, either in batting or bowling. Though tha Town eleven -was only a colts' side, it completely outclassed the Country players, who are not at home on a turf wicket. Country's first Innings produced only fiftyTn ' UUS ' 8n j score was eleven. £»"!«' B ® co " d innings they made 132. Tie ♦h« k th e side was even weaker than the batting. June bowlers were tried, and TmL°?« ™' Cl; f t J fen for 350 runs sil <>* I own team piled op. The Town team acquitted itself well. The best exhibition of batting was given by I. M. Hamilton, who compiled his 106 in a decisive fashion. From the start he showed no hesitancy, and playfed a good variety of strokes, it was his best display of the season and should enhance his chances for the Cantercricket team ' aco b 3 a ' B ° played aggressive

ti. the most outstanding bowler, tnough the opposition was not such as to test his strength. He keeps a good length a « B°wls a fast medium ball which comeß off the pitch with a nip. In the first innings he got two wickets for 11 runs, and in the second four wickets for 22 runs. Newton was also successful, especially in the first innings. A biting sou'-west wind, scudding clouds, and occasional passing showers made conditions unpleasant. The Play. M. L. Page and M. Beuth found their opening task easy, and six wickets were soon down for .17 runs. Newton went on in Page's place, and bowled J. Coe in his second over with the score at 27. Doak and W. Cowlin mado a short stand, until the former fell to a good one by Newton. He made 10. H. Thompson came next' and played a few good strokes. He was caught by W. Oliver at mid-off. H. Smith, the laßt man, opened up with a six. Aftor playing carefully for a space he attempted somo more big hitting and was bowled. G. 11. Haines and I. M. Hamilton started well for Town against the bowling of J. Bennett and H. Smith. It caused them little trouble, and Hamilton, playing confidently, soon reached tho half-century. Haines's shots were not so clean. At tho luncheon adjournment the pair had put on 103 without loss of a wicket. Batting sparkled after lunch, Hamilton driving with vigouj. Haines added three to ■ his score when he attempted a big hit and was bowled by Thompson. A. AV. Roberts was next, and was content to score singles by sound play. Meantime, Hamilton went along merrily, his off-driving being a feature. !!«_ was placing wristy shots with great precision. The omission of the Country Bkipper to place a man close in at mid-off was.costing his side three runs an over. Frequent bowling changes proved unavailing, and Hamilton hoisted his century with a squarecut far two. He retired with his score at 106. Jacobs was next. He began scoring quickly with pretty glide and cut shots, but was over-inclined to step across his wicket. Roberts ran slowly to 61 and retired without being beaten. W. Oliver took his place and ran a few short overs. Jacobs took his score to 74, when the Town captain, Page, called him to the pavilion. Falloon was the only other Town player to bat. He and Oliver played sound. cricket, but the pace slackened. Oliver sh6wed some of his better shots and had made 37 at the tea adjournment, when Town declared. Falloon was not out with 24, and the score stood at 350. The Country players started their second attempt at 4.30 p.m., and fared better. W. Doak and W. Cowlin were the opening batsmen. The former was bowled by Beuth before he had scored. A. Thompson came In and the pair played some nice cricket, the bowling oJ Page suffering. Beuth was proving too much for them, however, and ho got Cowlin when his score waa 20. Newton had a turn at the northern end with the ball, and Thompson, who had made 34, fell to him. Lindley'n slow bowling, did not trouble the batsmen overmuch, though M. Macfarlane was caught by Benth off hiip before be had scored. 0.. Johnstone and H. Smith stayed together' for soma time, but Beuth broke up the partnership by bowling Johnstone. Roberts was given a tnrn with the ball, and bowled H. Smith when he had made 23. He got another wicket when be caught Coe off his own bowling. Peacock followed, but did not get set before Lindley got him with a good one. Sail came next, and stayed without doing much scoring. Falloon took the ball and got Sail caught by Lindley off .his first over. Gnnn was last man. and he and Bennett kept the game going. Beuth went on again, and bowled Bennett with his third ball.
