OWNERS & BREEDERS.

CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION, A meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association was held last evening, Mr D. F. Dennehy presiding over a good attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs N. L. Price and W. Hayward. Correspondence was received from the New Zealand Railways in connexion with the carriage of horses from Wellington to Auckland for the racing at Christmas time. It was stated that a special train would leave Wellington for Auckland on December 16th. the horses would be carried in U waggons, and the traiu would travel at practically express speed. Forty horses must be guaranteed for the special train, but it was not anticipated that there would be any difficulty in acquiring this number.

Correspondence was received from the Department in connexion with the extra charges levied on owners and trainers in the matter of railage on the Main Trunk line. The secretary explained the difficulties that had arisen. The proposals made by the Railway Department, he said, were quite unsatisfactory, and he had replied to that effect.

Mr T. G. Fox moved, and it was agreed, that the secretary and presi dent be instructed to forward a letter to the Railway Department protesting against the charges made in the railage of horses, as the Association considers them all against the sport of trotting generally. It -was also decided that a deputation from the Association should interview responsible members, of the Railway Department. Stabling at Addington.

The chairman reported that on a visit to Addiugtoii ho had found part ot the stabling accommodation withdrawn from use. Some of the stalls were dusty and dirty. He had approached members of the track committee in the matter and had protested against the conditions ruling. The caretaker said he had been instructed to debar trainers from using the inner portion of the stabling enclosures Members of the course committee had been willing to meet him (the chairman) in his suggestions. Mr T. G. Fox asked from whom permission had to be obtained to indulge in training on Sunday mornings. Some trainers seemed to have preference in the matter. He personally had not been refused permission but some trainers seemed to have a distinct preference.

The chairman explained that up to the present no one had been refused permission to train horses at Addington on Sundays and so far as he was concerned it would be wise to wait until someone had been actually refused before taking any action. He explained that he did not think the Association had a case.

The matter dropped with a final protest from Mr Fox. Mr J. R.. McKenzie, who had offered to give a trophy to the leading trainer for the season, asked for a suggestion as to what form the award should take. It was agreed that a set of racing harness would be a suitable present, and it was decided to suggest this to Mr McKenzie. Broadcast. Mr T. G. Fox suggested that letters be written to the Auckland X.C. and Otahuhu T.C. asking that they should reconsider their decision to debar the broadcasting of their programmes. He said there were thousands of people in Canterbury who wished to hear tlie descriptions of the racing. He considered that the sport wanted a boost along and this was one way to get it. Mr Dennehy said that numbers ot people had been very much disappointed because no broadcast had been made of the recent Otahuhu Trotting Club's Meeting. It was decided to write to the Auckland and Otahuhu Clubs in the matter. Pee Complained of. A member asked that the Association should approach the Now Brighton Trotting Club with a roquest for better facilities for working on the grass track. At present matters were unsatisfactory, and for the privilege of working on the grass a trainer had to pay the sum of os jor each horse. Men who trained there all the year were treated the same as others. A resolution was passed that a letter be sent to the New Brighton Club that the Association considers that trainers who pay their fees and train regularly at New Brighton should not be charged a fee for the privilege of a ran on the grass track when their horses are engaged at other Meetings.

A member asked that the attention of the New Zealand Metropolitan and Canterbury Park Clubs be drawn to the lack of an ambulance room at Addiugton. There were no facilities there for the treatment of an.v accidents that might happen and at the recent meeting one spectator who had collapsed was taken to the riders' and drivers* room and treat-ed there.

It was decided to act as suggested. One resignation was received and five new members were elected.

DUNEDIN J.C.

STAND ACCOMMODATION.

[THE PRESS Special Service.]

DUNEDIN, December 7.

A special meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club was held to discuss the question of providing further accommodation in the new stewards' stand for members.

The president explained the proposal and laid before the meeting an estimate of the cost. A stand such as was now proposed could be completed for £3OOO more than had already been expended. If members were prepared to find £3OOO on loan to the club at 6 per cent, interest the committee would be prepared to carry out the desires of members. Unless the money was provided, the staud would be allowed to remain as it was at Wingatui to-day In order to tide the club over its present financial difficulties, the stewards had found among them £3OOO. If members wanted the stand it was up to them now to find the funds to build it with.

In answer to a question, the president said that members would advance £3OOO at 6 per cent, for threu years without security It was stated that a number of members had been interviewed, and about £IBOO had been promised. The meeting decided that it be a recommendation to the stewards to endeavour to raise the money among members and to proceed with the proposed new stand in brick or concrete as the committee might decide after consultation with the architect.

CANTERBURY DISTRICT COMMITTEE. The Canterbury District Committee met on Tuesday. The following programme was approved: Ashburton County Racing Club, January 14 th. Provisional trainers' licenses were recommended to W. Nelson and W. McDonald. A gentleman rider's certificate was recommended to James Cochrane. A conditional jockey's license was recommended to A. Torrential rain almost up to the time of commencing the racing at Woodville to-day did not augur well for the day's sport on tho occasion of the opening of the Summer Meeting, but fortunately it cleared off just prior to the first event. A heavy 'westerly gale prevailed, however, and only died away as the last race was run. The track was soft for a start, but fapidly improved, and at no stage was it heavy. When the rain was falling in torrents several owners scratched their horses and were afterwards sorry. Joy Bird won the handicap from Anolo and David Garrick. The favourite, Grand Knight, ; had every chance, but ho ran unkindly, and for him it was an exceedingly poor Auckland Gup trial. The Leighton three-year-old Cimabue made his reappearance in this race, but after being very prominent for a mile he failed to run. on. He can no j doubt be improved, but it waß-not a convincing rehearsal for his race against Agrion on New Year's Day in the Great Northern Derby. Royal Damon scored in the sprint event from Arrow Lad and Epistle. Winnerß were not easy to find, and four of the dividends reached double figures, that attached to tho success of Butterscotch in the concluding event being substantial. This and the early bad weather assisted towards the totalisator decrease of £1361 on the day, the amount handled being £13,958, as against £15,319 on the opening day last year. Kanga-atna Hurdles. Mister Gamp was £6 better backed than Red Fuchsia for the hurdles, and Polyphemus was next in order. Revel and Red Fuchsia were in charge early from StaT Area and Braeman, but at the first fence the iast-named nearly tost his rider. Polyphemus took charge when well settled down from Revol, Hyama, Red Fuchsia, Star Area, and Ohrissarto, with Mister Gamp well back. Polyphemus led into the straight, but Revel moved up at the last fence and once over came on to beat Polyphemus by a length. Red Fuchsia was three lengths further back third, with Star Area fourth. Braeman was fifth, Mister Gamp sixth, and Ohrissarto seventh. Revel ran a good race, and was always prominent. Polyphemus looked a bit unlucky to get beaten. In firm going he probably would iiave won comfortably. Red Fuchsia was near the front throughout, and had every chance. Star Area and Braeman were both finishing on well. Trial Plate. The number of scratchings in the Trial Plate did not obviate a division. In the first division Mr Gaisford's three-year-old Chelone was a warm order, wtih Royal Picture well backed. Chelone soon hit the front and was never off the bit to win easily by three lengths from Royal Picture, with Mark Mint a similar distance back third. Skyrider was fobrth, \ and then came with the bunch headed by Kahu Ariki. In the second division Dainty. Ways was a better favourite than Oard Trick. The latter was soon out in front, and he repeated the performance of Chelone in winning by three lengths, but it was not so gooll either from the time point of view or tho style in which it was accomplished. Air Force and Moutoa King wero the most prominent behind Card Trick all the way, and there was little more than half a length between this pair for second, with Dainty Ways right up. Dainty Ways did .not get away at all well, and she looked very unlucky. Greengrocer and Spearmiss did best of tho others, but the form was poor. Woodville Handicap, Grand Knight was a solid favourite for the principal event, Anolo being a substantial second choice. Royal Game was third fancy, and Cimabue was only moderately supported. Cimabue, Waicullus, Royal Game, and Grand Knight comprised the leading bunch early, but Joy Bird soon ran up and joined Cimabue. Cimabue led down the back from Joy Bird, Waicullus, Royal Game, and Grand Knight, and at the six furlongs post Gaze and Anolo moved up. A littlo further on Grand Knight dropped back three or four places. Joy Bird took the lead from Cimabue round the turn, with Royal Game, Waicullus, Anolo, and Gaze prominent, and Grand Knight making up some of his lost ground. Joy Bird led into the straight, and although strongly challenged by Anolo, held her place and beat him by a length. David Garrick came well into tjiird place a similar distance away. Waicullus was fourth, and Cimabue fifth. Then came Tintoretto, Gaae, and Grand Knight in a bunch. With Bennanee, Kovar, and Kilmiss scratched on the course, and Grand Knight galloping ungenerously, it was an easy race to win. Joy Bird ran well, all the same. Anolo was not well placed early, but ran a fair race, something parallel to his Levin Cup display. David Garrick was a long way back at the half mile. He finished strongly, but the fact that he could get so 'close at the finish indicates that the form was not particularly high class. Grand Knight, well placed was doing it on the bit for five furlongs, and then refused to do his best, and finished well out of the money. Cimabue ran a creditable race, but looked short of the necessary work. Waicullus was fair. Royal Game ran a very good mile. Flying Handicap. Scratchings so reduced the field for the hack sprint that no division was necessary. Backers went for Lucky Days and Eka. Miss Pat took the lead out of the barrier, and led to the half-mile from Eka, Helotis, Aeton, Ring Boy, and Some Lad. Helotis then took charge, and led round the turn and into the straight from Eka, Ring Boy, Miss Pat, Aston, Some Lad, and Lucky Days. Helotis was never troubled, to win by a length and a half from Ring Boy, who beat Eka by a length. Lncky Days was fourth, followed by Some Lad, Aston, Courageous, Miss Pat, i and Flying Shot ! Helotis won very decisively. Ring Boy and Eka ran good races, but the latter stopped badly in the concluding stages. Lucky Days

was not very fortunate In the race, and should have been closer. Some Lad was only fair. Aston made quite a respectable showing for a first appearance for several months. Miss Pat failed to see it ont. Courageous showed out momentarily at the start, but got lost afterwards, and had no chance of making up his ground. Oete Handicap. Royal Damon was a solid favourite for the 'open sprint, Sarchee and Arrow Lad being the best backed of the others. Epistle, Sarchee, and Royal Damon began best, Imitation being last away. Epistle lost her place at the half-mile, where Arrow Lad ran up and took charge round the turn from Sarchee and Royal Damon. Royal Damon was going well as they entered the straight, and once in line he challenged, and caught Arrow Lad, beating him home by a length and a half. Epistle came fast, and cut Sarchee out of third money. Piuthair was fifth, Imitation sixth, and Willow Wai seventh.

Royal Damon was always the winner, and Arrow Lad, in spite of a good race, had no chance with him. Epistle appeared » bit unlucky, as she lost several lengths at the half-mile. Sarchee was fi\ir, and had every chance. Piuthair, as expected, was running on at the finish. Nursery Handicap. Mr Stead scratched his pair for the two-year-old handicap, and backers then went for Marion's Birthday and Tea Miss. Chit played up, and delayed the start, but she got out first, and led from Shot Silk, Tea Miss, and Marion's Birthday. Chit led into tho straight from Shot Silk, Tea Miss, Marion's Birthday, Flying Hero, Australis, and Millais. Millais came strongly in the run home, and caught Chit, to win on the post. Australis was two lengths away third. Flying Horo was fourth, Moutoa Treasury fifth, and then came Shot Silk and Tea Miss. The winner is by Leighton from Marty, and she came solidy from the back. Chit had every chance. Australis was not well placed early, and did not appear very lncky. Flying Hero, one of Mr McDonald's Austral-ion-bred colts, by Flying King, ran quite a fair race, but outside of these the form was poor, Tea Miss being very disappointing. Borough Handicap. Partaga and Wanderlust practically monopolised the betting in the Borough Handicap, some support coming for Horomea. Partaga, Inner Harbour, and Phantasy comprised the leading division down the back, with Wanderlust at the head of the next bunch. Superb King made a big run on the turn, and Partaga led into the straight from Wanderlast, Superb King, Coot, and Horomea. A furlong from home Partaga and Wanderlust drew right away, and Wanderlust prevailed by a length. Superb King wbs four or five lengths back third. Coot was fourth, and then came Horomea, Tanagra, and Othon. There was nothing in it but the leading pair when it came to the business stages, and Wanderlust won decisively. Superb King could have been better handled, in which case ho would have been closer. Coot, Horomea, and Tanagra were fair. Othon got badly left. Whariti Handicap. Limosa started a very warm favourite in the concluding event, Atareria and Catkin being the best backed of tho others. Henna, Kalos, Mandarine, Butterscotch, tind Gordon Swift were the leaders out of the straight. Down the back Gordon Swift wend out clear, and led Butterscotch, Kalos, Mandarine, and Henna, with Limosa leading the others. Butterscotch had taken charge at the halfmile, and turned for home clear of Henna, Kalos, Gordon Swift, and Mandurine, with Catkin showing np on tho outer. Butterscotch withstood all challenges, and won by a length from Kalos, Henna, and Limosa, who finished in a heap, the judge placing them in that order. There was a big gap then to Gordon Swift. Blimp, and Mandarine. Butterscotch recently changed stables, going from Miss Maher to J. Griffiths. She has improved a lot, and won well to-day. Kalos, Henna, and Limosa all ran good races. Mandarine was prominent for a mile,_ and so was Gordon Swift. Blimp should improve. Atareria ran a very poor race, and was never within striking distance. TO-DAY'S ACCEPTANCES.
