SOCIETY OF ARTS.
* ANNUAL MEETING,
The annual meeting of the Canterbury Society of Arts was heldl yesterday afternoon, Mr Richard Wallwork presiding over an attendance of 25 members.
The annual report recorded with deep regret the death, early in the year, of one of its ex-presidents, Mr James Jamieson, who, during a long and active life, spent a considerable amount of time and energy fostering the interests of the Society and art in general. The conditional offer to the City of liia collection of pictures, which are at present housed in the Canterbury .College Ball, awaits a favourable opportunity for acceptance by the City. In moving the adoption of the annual report the president remarked that the Society's overdraft had been decreased to £144 this year from £383 the year before. In regard to the question of maintenance of the Art Gallery the Society's Council was at present marking time to a certain extent, as nothing could be done by the City Council until the question of the Jamieson bequest was settled.
It was decided to hold an extraordinary general meeting to consider a notice of motion that the proxy system of voting shouldl be followed at annual meetings. Election of Officers.
The election of officers to fill the places of those who had retired resulted as follows : —President, Mr Richard AVallwork; vice-presidents. Dr. G. M. L. Lester and Messrs N. L. Macbeth and A. E, Baxter; Council, Messrs A. 1,. C'ropp, C. P. Kelly, F. A. Shurrock, and McGregor Wright.
