SOUTH AFRICA.
—. —* PERIOD OF PROSPERITY. [THE PRESS Special Service.]
AUCKLAND, December 6,
"South Africa is very prosperous at the moment," said Mr E. T. Church, a Durban business man, who reached 'Auckland by the Marama this morning Mr Cnurch said that outside of South Africa a lot seemed to have been made of the flag incident, but it was largely a South African affair, and when it was decided to have the Union Jack in one corner everybody seemed to be happy. B)e said that the location of the new diamond field at Licthenberg in the Transvaal had given the domestio affairs of the Union a big impetus, but diamonds were being found on such a widie scale that it was thought the industry already established would be threatened. As it was, the South African Government had to pass special legislation to prevent diamondiferous areas being taken up as farms. Mr Church said that the find went to show that the mining resources of the country were a long way from being exhausted and that there was still scope for much development in that direction.
