NEW STATION OPENED.
LAST EVENING'S FUNCTION,
Station 3ZC, Christchurch's new broadcasting station, was officially opened last evening by the Mayor, Mr J. K. Archer, in the presence of a largff gathering of radio enthusiasts, including Mr A. It. Harris, managing director of the Broadcasting Company of New Zealand, Ltd., Mr Head, Chief lladio Inspector for Canterbury, and other representatives of the Post and Telegraph Department. Before declaring the new station open the Mayor stated that prior to that evening he had been under the impression that radio broadcasting was a monopoly of one company. He was pleased to find that this was not the case and congratulated the directors of Home Recreations, Ltd., on having the enterprise to institute a new station. One of the greatest difficulties to-day was to get people to take an interest in home life. Home Recreations, Ltd., would render a great service to the community if it could make home more attractive to the young people. It w'as doing_ a great work in assisting philanthropic funds, particularly in raising funds to provide toys for the children in needy homes at Christmas. He con gratulated the directors of the company on their enterprise and wished the new company every success in the future. On behalf of the directors of Home Recreations, Ltd., Mr J. T. Sutton, chairman of directors, thanked the Mayor for his attendance. A flashlight photograph of thoso present was taken at this stage of the proceedings. . Mr A. R Harris, managing director of the Broadcasting Company of New Zealand, Ltd., brieflv addressed Jis-teners-in, and wished the new station every success in its future transmissions. A miscellaneous programme was then broadcast from the studio. During the evening reports were received from all over the Dominion —all of a highly complimentary nature. One Auckland listener-in telegraphed: "Hearty congratulations. Static bad but good loud-speaker strength between static bursts. Modulation good, no fading." Many other telegraphic and telephonic reports were received from as far south as Gore.
At tb<> conclusion of the evening's programme, those present were entertained at supper by the directors of Home Recreations, Ltd., speeches being made by Mr J. T. Sutton, chairman of directors of the company, and Mr L. E. Strachan, managing director.
Presentations were made to Mr McLennan, of Canterbury College. Mr Head, chief radio inspector for Canterbury, Mr R. Gibbs, and Mr Moreton, of the Municipal Electricity Department, who rendered material assistance in the erection of the new station.
