LONDON, October 19,
Owing to the death of Lord Iveagh, Lord Elveden, who has represented Southend since 1918, now has a scat in tb" House of Lords, and a by-election will be necessary to fill his place in the House of Commons. The local Conservative Association have extended an
Ltation to the new Lady Iveagh, who is the elder daughter of the late Lord Onslow, formerly Governor of New Zealand.
The figures at the last general election were:—
Viscount Elveden (C.) .. 23,417 Mr J. D. Young (Lib.) .. 10,924 Mr S. A. Moseley (Lab.) .. 3,144 In 1923 they were:— Viscount Elveden (C.) . 15,566 Mr Young (Lib.) .. .. 15,453 There has been a remarkable growth of Liberalism in the South-end constituency since 1918. In 1923 the Liberal candidate came within 113 votes of winning the seat. Lord Elveden's majority at the last> Zinovieff election cannot be taken as any guide. The present Liberal candidate is the Hon. Dougall Meston, son of Lord Mes* ton. After passing through Sandhurst, he joined the Boyal Artillery, rising to the rank of captain. He left the Army in 1922, and was called to the Bar. He is a good speaker, and has already made a decided impression in Southend.
The Countess of Iveagh has consented to stand as Conservative candidate.
