Nominations for the Westland Racing Club's Midsummer Meeting close at 9 p.m. to-day. Nominations for the Stratford, Marton, and Hawke's Bay Meetings close on Friday.
Nominations for the Greymouth Meeting close on Sftturdlay.
Acceptances for the Oamaru and iWaipa Meetings close on Friday.
The Woodville Meeting will open today and conclude to-morrow. A large number of horses were exercised at Riccarton yesterday, but there was very little fast work executed, mostly confined to those who were not racing at Timaru last week.
As T. Green will be otherwise engaged, J. Barry will rido Agrion,' Eulalie, and Golden Armour in their Auckland engagements. Footfall is making.a slow recovery from the ailment he contracted on Saturday. It is surmised he madle a false step on the crossing track during the gallop and wrenched his shoulder. He pulled up well, and the lameness did not assert itself until he was unsaddled. At present he shows little signs of the trouble when walking, but is decidedly sore if allowed! to trot. It is hoped to have him on the track again to-mor-row, but further serious work is considered out of the question in the meantime, and it is reasonable to suppose that the idea of the Auckland trip will be abandoned.. If so, it is probable Paperchase will also have her engagements discontinued, and be sent to the southern Meetings. F. E. Jones, who had been booked to ride Footfall in the Auckland Cup, has agreed to take the mount on Rapier if the former is withdrawn.
Childsplay continues to reel off fast times at Riccarton with uncanny regularity and yesterday was sent four furlongs on the plough to execute a strong gallop. Under a good hold she registered 48sec in an effortless manner.
Agrion and Eulalie were each given serviceable tasks at Riccarton yesterday, the latter covering six furlong 3 on the plough in 1.17 in company with the three-year-old filly, Golden Armour, who displays a lot of speed in her track work.
Rapier and Centrepiece were again associated in a strong gallop over a mile on the plough at Riccarton yesterday, occupying 1.45. Both these horses have done plenty of solid work of late, and they promise to be in forward ordter for their Ellerslie programme.
Paperchase galloped five fprlongs on the plough at Riccarton yesterday in 1,3, and two other Auckland candidates, Paper Boy and Don Jose, covered seven furlongs on the same track in 1.31 2-6.
Count Cavour and Satrap hopped off together at the mile post at Riccarton yesterday, the former easily accounting for his stable-mate in fair time. Satrap has had a few easy days owing to receiving slight veterinary treatment, but should be all right aga'in for the Auckland trip.
Countersign and Rotor, who will patronise the southern Meetings, ran six furlongs on the insidle grass track at Riccarton yesterday in good time, finishing togetner.
First Sight (Gay Lad—Snapshot) and Stormy, who will be taken to the Manawatu and Marton Meetings in company with Arikiwai, registered creditable time in a five-furlong task at Riccarton yesterday. First Sight may take time, but he shows plenty of promise.
Projector, who may accompany Martian Spear, Greyfincn, and rledgo to the West Coast Meetings, is at present in fine fettle and yesterday galloped live furlongs in time that equalled that registered by Stormy and First Sight. Riccarton stables will not be strongly represented numerically at the Manawatu Summer Meeting, the Only horses appearing in the list of nominations published to-day being Lady Swinton, Arikiwai, Hoylake, Assurance, Stormy, and First Sight. The two-year-old Silver Paper is being given useful tasks at Riccarton with a view to taking part at the Wellington Meeting next month. By his two victories at Timaru last week stakes won by Battle Colours rose to £637, an amount which has put him out of hack class. Although not nominated for the Dunedin Meeting, »he will be sent to the Southland New Year Meeting and will be accompanied by Moorland.
The ruling favourites for the Auckland Cup are Footfall and Rapier, and the most sought after in the Railway Handioap are Aussie, Kiosk, Crown Area, Lysander, Grand Knight, Whito Fang, Shirley, Joy King, Limited, Paperchase, and Money Order.
The two-year-old Ridgemount (Leighton—Lalla "Rookh), who won the Canterbury Stakes in Sydney, will have his first race in New Zealand at the Woodville Meeting to-dny. By the glowing accounts of this youngster's capabilities he should be a warm order for the Nursery Handicap.
Mister Gamp incurred a penalty for the hurdle race at Woodville to-day for his Feilding win, and he and Red Fuchsia, who raced well at the New Zealand Cup Meeting, should command most support. . Grand Knight is being seriously considered for the Auckland Cup, and if he is to have any chance in that event he should create an impression in the Woodville Handicap to-aay. Bennanee ?? Anolo present most opposition to the English horse.
The latest report regarding George loung is that he has set up as a trainer in Sydney. It is stated that his brother, Harold Young, may return to ri6w Zealand and set up as a trainer. Young, who wag a successful rider earlier in his career, went to Australia some time ago, but he had the. misfortune to meet with a serious accident in Queensland.
Tlio New Zealand-bred Jazz Baby, by Romeo (imp.)—Dixiland ridden by M. McCarten, won the High-weight Handicap at the Newcastle Jockey Club's Meeting on November 23rd. Jazz Baby is one of A. D. "Webster's team at Canterbury Park. The annual meeting of the Waiau Racing Club will be held on Monday, January 2nd, 1928. The club, which is very enthusiastic _ and progressive, has made substantial improvements during the past year. They are fortunate this year in having an excursion train running for the coming fixture, which should be well patronised, as it arrives an hour before the first race starts, and leaves at 6 p.m. Nominations for nil events close with the secretary, Waiau, at 9 p.m. on Tuesday next. The Earl of Wilton, whose death was reported! recently, was only thirty-one years old, and is succeeded by his six-year-old son, Viscount Grey de Wilton. He also leaves a daughter, Lady Alexandra Wilton, aged 8. The Earl of Wilton had a brief but remarkable career as an owner of racehorses. Hte registered his colours in May, 1918, when he was only twenty-two, and subsequently appointed H. Leader as his private trainer. At the end of the year he had 1 about 20 horses. Some of these were yearlings for which large prices had been paia, and one, indeed, proved to be a bargain. This was a colt by The Tetrarch —Snoot, which was bought for 3100gns. He was named Caligula, and won the St. Leger, but not in Lord Wilton's colours, for a few days before the race he was sold at a high price to Mr Goculdas, the Indian owner.
R. lieed, who suffered a severe injury to his eye at Takapuna through a flying clod, is recovering well. At one stage his eye was very bad), but he received treatment in hospital at Auckland, and should be able to return home in a few days and resume riding. "The Yeoman's" remarks on the two and three-year-olds engaged at the Auckland Summer Meeting and an account of Catmint's career are attractive features in the "Weekly Press" this week.
TROTTING NOTES. Acceptances for the New Brighton T.C.'s Summer Meeting close on Monday. A meeting of the Canterbury Owners' andi Breeders' Association will be held this evening. The handicapper, Mr H. Brinkman, has amended the handicaps of John Dee in the two trotting events at the Oamaru Meeting. The horse is now 60 yards behindl in the Waikaura Handicap and 48 yards behind in the Wingatui Handicap. horses engaged at the Wellington Trotting Club's Meeting on Saturday will be tnken north by the s.s. Wahine to-morrow night, and a further batch will make the trip on Friday. Richore, winner of the 1926 New Zealand Sapling Stakes, is back in R. W. Franks's stable. It will be remembered that Franks was responsible for the early education of the Rey de Oro gelding and prepared him for the Sapling Stakes. He .takes the place of a very promising three-year-old trotter by Happy Voyage from a mare by Petereta, who has gone into W. J. Tomkinson's stable. Owing to continued ill-health Mr W. Trist_ has decided to diispose of the trotting gelding, Duke Bingen. The nominations received by the Ashbuiton Trotting Club for its Meeting on Boxing Day give every promise of most interesting racing and of the Meeting turning out a financial success. The • nominations received represent a tidy sum, and with a fair proportion of acceptors a good proportion of the prize money will have been obtained. The Ashburton Trotting Cup includes in the list of nominations both numbers and quality, and horses of the calibre of Fight Ever, Trampfast, General Bingen, King Pointer, Menember, and Co. should be capable of making ia most interesting race. Mr Brinkman will declare the handicaps on December 19th, and acceptances close the following day.
The Oamaru-trained Brentloc arrived at Christchurch on Monday night and was sent north last night to fulfil _ engagements at the Wellington Meeting on Saturday. He was given useful work at Addington yesterday.
Nourmahal, driven by E. C. McDermott, was given a good work-out over' two miles at Addington yesterday. She is engaged in the Wilford Handicap at Wellington on Saturday.
Firpo, until recently in M. B. Edwards s stable at Yaldhurst, is now under the care of N. C. Price. Loganwood and Sea Pearl worked at New Brighton yesterday over a mile and a half and by their efforts showed that they are nearing the top of their form. Sea Pearl will make the trip to Auckland in quest of the big stakes offered.
Taurekareka, who will probably make his next appearance at the New Brighton Meeting on the 15tli inst., is in great order and gave a pleasing display of pacing yesterday morning.
Silk Thread and Logan Park are the prime favourites for the Wellington Gold Cup on Saturday, and Epigram, Pointalena, and Logan Chief are well fancied for the Sharpe Handicap.
ACTION FAILS. (rszss ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.) HAMILTON, December 6
A case of unusual interest arising out of a speculation in the purchase of a trotting horse by a Hamilton motor salesman came before Mr Justice Herdman in the Supreme Court, when Alfred William Ebbett took proceedings against Robert Young, of Matamata, to recover £460 general and £IOO special damages' on the grounds of alleged fraudulent misrepresentation and, alternatively, alleged! breach of warranty on the sale of a trotting horse called Bingen Bell. The evidence of tho trainers on the promise given by the horse was conflicting, while apparently there was a misunderstanding as to the price originally paid for the horse in the negotiations by Ebbett for the purchase.
Judgment was given for defendant,

FAILURE TO ATTEND ENQUIRY. (SPECIAL TO TBI PRESS.) GKEYM.OUTH, December 6. The District Committee of the Greynioutli Jockey Club met this evening for the purpose of enquiring into a complaint made by the racecourse inspector with regard to the alleged conduct of Joseph Nohra, of lleefton, m attempting to bribe the jockey D. Perrotti, D. JEvans, A. Beban, F. Roche, H. i. Doogan, F. H. lvilgour. F- McGregor, and W. H. Parfitt. Messrs J. Torrance (racecourso inspector) and F. G. Hanlon, of Christchurch, were also present. Mr Torrance reported to the meeting that notices to attend the enquiry had been served on Cotton and McLennan.

ENGLAND'S BEST.
TRAINER AND RIDER. If, towards the close of the current season, some of the English startingprice bookmakers declined to take bets on G. Richards's mounts, it was not surprising. . . . tie outclassed his
opponents. His wins were more than double those of any other rider, and his total of 164 for the season was the greatest in England since F. Wootton rode 187 winners in 1911.
The English fiat-racing season closed last weeii, and, aa was certain some time ago, U. ilicliaitia was an easy nrst in the winning jockeys', list, ile nad 164 wins, wuiie i_/. Elliott, who was second, recorded only 77.
Richards's advance has been remarkable, as his first winning ride was in 11*21. His father was an under manager in a iiihropshire colliery, and it was stated that it was on pit ponies Richards learned to ride. Later he was apprenticed to M. Hartigan, of Ogbourne, and that trainer pushed him along as much as possible. Richards recognises this, and is giving Hartigau first claim on his services, notwithstanding that, in order to do so, he recently turned down a substantial offer from a wealthy patron. Spelled for a Year. Last year he was taken ill shortly after the commencement of the flatracing season. He caught cold while riding at Lincoln in March, and, as-, it was feared serious lung trouble might result, he retired for the remainder of the year in order that his treatment might be thorough. He has reason to thank his wisdom, as he started this year in good health, and has ridden brilliantly throughout. His record since he commenced riding is as under: Wilis. Mounts. 1921 ... ... 5 47 1922 ... ... 5 72 1923 ... ... 49 324 1924 61 517 1925 118 730 19*26 ... ... 5 53 1927 164 Richards is 22 years of age, and as last month he rode at 7-5, it is certain he will never be heavy. He has not yet been on a classic winner, so he still has something to look forward to. Frank Wootton, in 1909, rode 165 winners, and in 1911 his score was 187. Richards' 164 easily beats anything recorded in England since Wootton did so well. The Leading Trainer. The veteran A. Taylor Bhone in his last year's association with the English Turf as a trainer. He will in future act in a managerial capacity in connexion with Manton, which means that his great experience will still be at the service of patrons of that stable. Since he first took charge of Manton he _ has headed the English winning trainers' list eight seasons, his greatest year being 1925, when he had 25 winners of 51 races of the total value of £56,570. Last year he was second with £49,772. This season Taylor's total is £55,659, being the return for 47 races won by 29 different horses. Taylor was beaten for first by Frank Butters with 26 winners, 51 races, and £56,531 in stakes. In Luck's Way. Most of Butters' successes were with horses owned by Lord Derby, who took first place in the winning owners' list. Eighteen of his horses accounted fo" 37 races and £47,000 in stakes. ]t was at the close of last vea.r Butters took over the Stanley House stable from the Hon. G. Lambton, I,hough the latter is still connected with it in an advisory capacity. The name of the most successful sire was not cabled with the other statistics, but when the latest mail left England Buchan (brother to Mr P. Miller's stallion Saltash) was loading. NORTHLAND f.C.
