DISPUTE SETTLED.
* DUNEDIN TRAMWAYMEN'S WAGES.
(THE PRESS Special SerTice.]
DUNEDIN, December 6.
The hearing of the dispute between the Dunedin Tramways Union, and the Dunedin City Corporation was resumed this morning by the Conciliation Council.
The Union asked for an increase of I}<l an hour for conductors for the first year, working up from Is lOd an hour to Is Hid instead of from Is Bsd to Is 10£ d, and! for motormen and gripmen from Is llid to 2s lid instead of from Is 9id to Is Hid as at present. A corresponding increase was asked for in respect to other workers. ■ Cr. J. B. Shacklock, on behalf of the assessors for the Corporation, said the Council had nothing to give away in this matter. It was quite well known that the penny tare was doomed if anything were given away. The Dunedin tramway employees had many privileges, and if they were not prepared to accept the present award then the whole thing must go to the Arbitration Court. The Commissioner suggested that an agreement might be reached if a rate of a halfpenny an .hour less than Auckland were accepted. This would mean that motormen would get Is 10id an hour, rising to Is 11 Jd an hour, and conductors Is Sid, rising to Is After both carries had retired, the emplovers made an offer along the lines of the Auckland award and Mr J. Robinson, on behalf of the applicants, said they would accept the rate of a id an hour less than that provided in the Auckland award.
