CANTERBURY MARKETS

FORWARD VALUES. BT OOK COMMERCIAL IDITOE.) Tuesday Evening. Interest in the grain trade is practically confined to a little forward business. Oats have firmed a little, due possibly to the hope that Australia will want further supplies next autumn. B Gartons are quoted at 3s 2d f.0.b., s.i., and A's at 3s 6d for April-May-June delivery. Prompt wheat is also a shade firmer, the Sydney shipping trouble being the influence in this development. A little business has taken place jit 6s lid f.o.b.

Peas are weaker, the price for next erop receding by 2d a bushel, the current quotation being 7s f.0.b., s.i. The Home market is dull. All classes of seeds are exciting very little interest. ' •

The forward potato market is inclined to weaken. The bottom fell out of the market last week-end for old tubers. Early in the week up to £6 10s was paid for one or two lots required in a hurry, but on Saturday £4 was ruling. It is'believed there are still a few growers who refused the week or two of good prices, and are left with stocks which, now that new potatoes are coming in freely, are not worth the cost of picking over. [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, December 6. • So far as southern potatoes are concerned tho market has collapsed. Everyone now iB rushing the new crop, and those with stocks of old season's on hand are finding difficulty in quitting same, and in some cases are willing to accept any straightout offer. It now appears that there are more on hand than was understood to be the case, hence the present position. Since last report many more farmers in Pukekohe district have commenced to dig, and the season there is at its flush. Prices have receded to ,12s to 13s per cwt on trucks, a basis which is expected to rule with little .alteration until after the New Year. It is reported that fair business in next season's southern crop has been done on the basis of £4 15s per ton, f.o.b. Merchants are quitting stocks of Canadian onions as rapidly as possible in view of the expected arrival of cheaper onions from Victoria. , Although southern quotations for oats are a shade firmer, this has not affected the local market.

In view of the small quantities coming forward from the coast, the maize market is firm.
