ST. ALBANS BURGESSES.
* ADDRESS BY MR H. HOLLAND, M.P.
The St. Albans Burgesses' Association met last night, Mr G. T. Grover presiding over a good attendance.
An interesting address was given by Mr H. Holland, M.P., descriptive of his visit, earlier this year, to Australia. Referring to the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works, Mr Holland said that in Christchurch it was considered that there were too many local bodies and that there should be a Metropolitan Board of Works. On visiting the office of the Melbourne Board of Works he had found that it dealt only with water supply, and sewerage, and its members considered that if the Board had any further duties imposed on it the Board would be overloaded.
A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Holland for his address. The Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) wrote that when drainage contracts left streets in a bad condition it was customary to charge the contractors with the cost of repairs. The chairman said that there were evidences in Mersey, Berwick, and Flockton streets that this procedure was being followed. Regarding the new lamp at Trafalgar street near the corner of Edgeware road, the Municipal Electricity Department wrote that the matter would be gone into during the next street lighting inspection. It was decided to draw the attention of the City Council to several dangerous corners in St. Albans. It was agreed that the next meeting of the Association should be held in February.
