LITTLE GIRL'S DEATH.
TRAGEDY AT CHERTSEY. An unfortunate accident resulting in the death of the sixteen-months-old daughter of Mr and Mrs W G- Copland, of Chertsey, occurred yesterday morning when th© cnilti was knocked down by the car which was being backed out of the shed by its mother.
An inquest was held yesterday afternoon before Mr R. Clark, Coroner. J label Gladys Copland, mother of the child, said she was backing the car out of the garage at about 9.2$ a.m. to take one of her girls to school. After reaching the house she discovered the deceased, Phylis Valarie, lying on the grass. Witness was not aware that anything had happened until her attention was drawn to the child, who was trying to cry. Witness took her to Dr. Bagley at Rakaia. Witness could not say whether the child was knocked down by the car or whether the car ran over her.
In reply to tho Coroner, Mrs Copland said the child was playing at the back door when she went to the car.
Dr. Baglcy said- that when the child was brought to him at Rakaia she had just recently expired. There wore signs of hemorrhage on tho nose and mouth, and evidence of having rome in contact will some blunt object about the head. There was no doubt that death was due to a fracture ot the skull.
The Coroner returned a verdict- that deceased accidentally met her death as a result of a fracture of the skull through I>eing knocked down by a car driven by her mother while backing out of the parage. No blame was attachable t-o anvone.
