Kectricity Committee. The Electricity Committeo reported an follows: In .connexion with remits for tho forthcoming Municipal Conference, the committee wishes to draw attention to the fact that public authorities are exempt from all stamp duties. Local authorities are exempt from some stamp duties, but not those on cheques. Under Section 2 of the Stamp Duties Act, 1922, the term "public authority" includes "any Department or instrument of the executive Government in New Zealand." Education Boards have been included under public authority. If an Education Board can be classed as a public authority as distinct from a local authority, there appear to be no grounds for a municipality not being included under the same definition. Under tho circumstances, the following remit is recommended:—"That in view of the fact that Education Boards have recently been held to be exempt from stamg duty on cheques, it is the opinion of this conference that other local bodies are entitled to the same exemption." The report was adopted. Town Planning and Housing. The Town-Planning, Housing, and Health Committee reported as follows: An application has been received for permission to erect a garage of poilite at No. 485 Worcester street, Linwood. There are two existing garages close by, one of poilite and the other covered with rusticated weatherborads. The proposed garage would be partly hidden by the existing poilite garage next door, and the committeo has therefore referred the matter to the chairman of the committee and Cr. Andrews, with power to act. The report wa» adopted.
