NEW INFANT WING.
SOMERFIELD SCHOOL. Tho new infant department at the Somerfield School was opened on Saturday aftornoon on tho occasion of the annual fete to raiso funds for the picnic and for end-of-year prizes. Mr W. H Winsor, member of tho Canterbury Education Board, performed the ceremony, referring to tho very modern architecture of the new building, which was on the latest approved lines. . , Mr C. F. Dobbs, chairman of tho School Committee, also spoke, tracing tho growth of the school during tho past years, and the additions that had been made necessary. Mr S. A. Clark, tho headmaster, urged residonls in the district to send thoir children to tho Somerflcld School now that there was ample accommodation, and it would not bo necessary to send any prospective pupils elsewhere to avoid overcrowding, as had happened before tho new building had been orected.* ~,.,, j In the evening a children's fancy dress carnival was held, which- was very largely attended. Goods): (boys) best dressed, Max Milne (Toy Soldier); most original, Terrenes Durnnt (Dutch Boy); poster, Alan Bellamy (Jack Horner). Five to seven years: (Girls) Bost dressed, Ngaio Durant (Turk) ( most original, Juno Collins (Wedding Cake): poster, Freda Hales (Nelson Moata's Tea): (boys) best dressed, F. Leo (Old King Cole); most original, Douglas Campbell (Rooster): postor, Cyril McDonald (Perfection Ice Cream). Seven to ten years: (Girls) Best dressed, Marjorie Gillardl (80-Peep); most original, Hazel Dobbs (Daylight Saving)! postor Yance Dobbs (Cooke's Ice Cream); (boys) best dressed, B, Waring (Indian); most original, A. Britten (Paperhonger); poster, N. Hocking (Chinese Chocolates). Ten to thirteen: (Girls) Best-dressed, I. Saunders (Balloon), second M. Neilson (Dutch Girl); most original, R. Brown (Oranges and Lemons); postor, B. Ingram (Wrigley's Spearmint) ; (boys) best dressed, T. Haworth (Spanish Pirate), second J. Waring (Cowboy); most origlual, J. Sutherland (Bees); poster, E. Trinberth (Wriglcy's Bpearmint). Over thirteen years: (Girls) best dressed, F. Ditfort (Karitane Nurse); most original, N. Neilson (Charwoman); poster, 0, Brightmore (Painter); (boys) J. Morrlssey (Chimney Sweep). , , 3. Hocking and B. Hocking teeeived first prize in pairs as a bride and groom, with B. and L. Smith second.
