+ GOVERNMENT ATTACKED. (B" CABLE— PRESS ASSOCIATION—COrVRIGUT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. AND SUN CABLE.)
(Received December 2nd, 8.20 p.m.)
LONDON, December 1
In the House, of Lords, Lord Carson, supporting Lord Harris's motion demanding that the Landlord and Tenant Bill be referred to a Select Committee, angrily attacked the Government, declaring: "Tho greatest calamity to this country is the present Government. It has an overwhelming majority and will listen to nobody. It thinks all its members have to do is to come to the House of Lords and say, 'We are a Conservative Government and upholders of the House of Lords. You must pass this Bill without examination.' If the House of Lords is unable to throw out, amend, or examine Bills, what are wo here for?" Lord Birkenhead, Viscount Cave, tho Marquess of Reading, Viscount Burnham, and others pointed out that owing to pressure of time the motion would kill the Bill, and it would be interpreted by the country as a backstairs way of throwing out the Bill in the interests of the landlords. Lord Harris's motion was defeated.
