TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

MEETING OF BOARD. The Board of Governors of the Christchurch Technical College met last evening. Those present were Messrs McGregor Wright (chairman), E. H. Andrews, G. R. Franklin, W. R. Gahagan, W. Johnson, J. W. Graham, G. A. Pasooe, J. W. Roberts, G, T. Thurston, W. H. Winsor, and Mrs A. E. Herbert. The chairman accorded Mr Pascoe a welcome to the Board. He was appointed to several of tho sub-committees. The chairman reported that tho annual prize-giving would be held in the Choral Hall on Monday, December 19th. Tho question arose whether the prize-giving should be held in the evening or in the afternoon. It was decided to hold tho prize-giving in the evening, as usual. The report was adopted. Establishment of Schools Board. Correspondence was received from Sir Heaton Rhodes and several Canterbury M.P.'s with reference to the suggested establishment of a Technical Schools Board. It was decided to thank the writerß. Donations of £2O from the Waimairi County Council, £ls from the Canterbury Employers' Association, and £1 Is from tho Bricklayers' Union were received. The Education Department wrote setting out tho conditions of admission of student teachers to tho superannuation fund. A roport was received from the honorary examiners on cabinetmaking, Messrs D. A. Donn, S. Swanson, and J. A. Black. It stated that the work shown was almost without exception greatly in advanca of last year's. It was understood that one of tho older apprentices had passed his examination for the City and Guilds, aloo a second-year apprentice. The report recommended that smaller and more compact articles, with good construction embodied, be made in future. Appointments Committee. The Appointments Committee reported as follows:—A circular letter from tho Director for Education giving a reminder that only persons entered in the register of teachers' may be employed by the Boards controlling schools has been received. The committee recommended that two memorial scholarships Gard'ner's) be awarded at the end of the current year for tho session of 1928, one to a girl finishing her first year in the home science course this year and the other to a girl finishing the second year of her course. { The recommendation was adopted. The Buildings Committee reported as follows:—We have arranged to bring beforo the City Council again tho matter of the flooding of the corner of Barbadoos street and Moorhouse avenue during the heavy rains, as it affects tho college premises and particularly the cellars. We are obtaining a comprehensive report on the condition of the roof and tanks at the Technical College, since thoy appear to bo in early need of repairs and renewals. The report was adopted. Finance Committee. The Finance Committee reported as follows:—The treasurer's financial statement for the period October 20th to November 17th, showing receipts amounting to £3104 2s 9d, and expenditure of £lBBl 2s 9d, and a total credit balance of £1343 18s 2d, was

received and adopted. The committee passed for payment accounts amountine to £292 13s sd. It has arranged for a deputation to wait on the executive of the Chamber of Commerce regarding the renewal of the annual contribution on December Srd, at 8.15 p.m. An offer from the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Jointers to give tools for prizes instead of its annual cash contribution had been accepted. The report was adopted. The committee recommended that charges made to plumbing students for class material be increased from 5s to 10s, in view oi the heavy loss incurred by the Board in the provision of such material; and that a request from the Employers' Association for a list of associations of employers contributing to the college bo acceded to, and that the college request that any meeting called by the association for the discussion of Technical College finance be open to representatives of the college. Tho recommendation was adopted. Memorial Scholarships, The Ladies' Advisory Committee reported that full arrangements had been made for the examination of practical work of students in training at the end of the term; and that it wished to express appreciation of the results of the collections for Mrs Gard'ner's Memorial Scholarships and for i,he memorial tablet, tho amounts required for both purposes being now in hand. Mrs Herbert said £23G 15s had been collected, which with subsidies equalled approximately £SOO. The sum of £35 had been collected for tho tablet. The report was adopted. The principal (Dr. D. E. Hansen) reported as follows:—For this meeting there appears to bo an unusual number of examination successes and other achievements by our students to place on record. Rupert Pearce, a third-year boy taking the commercial matriculation course in the day school, has been awarded tho scholarship of the Australasian Institute of Secretaries in competition with candidates from both Australia and Now Zealand. He was nominated for it by our accountancy instructor, Mt R. .T. McLaren, and as the value of the scholarship is £SO, together with free tuition till ho has qualified for the diploma of the institute", his success is noteworthy. In the Government examination for shorthandtypists, held last month, we had 17 candidates, and 15 of them were successful. The day school Candidates secured 100 per cent, of passes. In ' the examination conducted by the City and Guilds of London Institute, the following successes were recorded: Carpentry and joinery, grade 1, 3; carpentry and joinery, grade 2, i second-class passes. Cabinot making, grade 1, 1 (with bronze medal); cabinetmaking. final. 1 second-class uisa. Mechanical engineering, grade I,_ 5. Electrical engineering, grade 1. 9; electrical engineering, grade 2, 1 (continuous current). Tho bronze medal is an award for work of special merit, and was trained by Edward S. Hodgo in the cabinetmaking section. It is eight years since this kind of award was last gained by any of our students, and very few are given throughout New Zealand each year. I have to acknowledge *he receipt of a cheque for £1 Is forwarded by Mr J. Soper for Messrs Weeks, Ltd., as a token of their interest in the work of the typography classes. It was decided to congratulate individuals and teams on their athletic successes. Thp report was adopted. It was decided to hold the next meeting on February 10th.
