NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

—+ — . Tides. j It will be high tide on the beach j this morning at 10.51 o'clock, and in the river at noon, and to-morrow at i 11.42 a.m., and 12.5S p.m. respectively | South Brighton Bridge. 'Residents and others are reminded that the official opening of the new bridge at South Xew Brighton takes place this afternoon at 2.30. The ceremony will be performed by the Hon. Mr Anderson, Minister for Marine. At the conclusion of the formal business the party are adjourning to the South Brighton Hall, where afternoon tea will be dispensed. Central Gala. At the last meeting of the Gala Committee, the Mayor, Mr A. W. Owles, occupied the chair. Messrs A. E. Purse, J. Gamble, and E. A. Stokes were elected as a Publicity Committee. The arranging of the children's programme was left in the hands of the Mayor, and Mr J. Gamble. It was agreed that tenders be invited for side-shows from professional showmen, and for the right of controlling the official programme. It was decided to apply to the Borough Council for the exclusive use of the foreshore on January 11th and the right to make a charge for admission to the gala area. It was agreed that application should be made to the Tramway Board for the usual concessions.

Boy Scouts' Concert. _ The local troops of Boy Scouts assisted by friends gave a pleasing entertainment in the Parish Hall in aid of the Scout funds. Mr G. W. Bishop, District Commissioner, and Mr F. J. L. Scott, scoutmaster, were present. There was a capital attendance, and all the items were thoroughly appreciated. The programme included Scout songs, camp scenes, impersonations, playettes, gymnastic displays, etc. New Brighton Croauet Club. In a friendly game v. Barrington street, played on the local green, the scores wero as follows (Barrington names first): — Doubles: Mrs Giddens and Mrs Clark 26 v. Mrs Cook and Mrs Dey 17; Mrs Grey and Miss Maze 26 v. Mrs O'Donnell and Miss Skipworth 6; Mrs White and Mrs Memmott 26 v. Mrs Luxton and Mrs Ward 18. Singles: Mrs Giddens 10 v. Mrs Clark 26; Mrs Cook 20 v. Mrs Dey 15; Mrs White 22 v. Mrs Memmott 26; Mrs Ward 26 v. Mrs Luxton 21; Miss Maze 126 v. Mrs Grey 26; Miss Skipworth 22 'v. Mrs O'Donnell 14. i Municipal Band. The annual meeting of the Municipal Band was held in the practico room on Thursday evening. Mr A. P. Hopkins presided over a fair attendance. The annual report and balance-sheet wero adopted, the latter showing the assets to bo £784 0s 10 d, and the liabilities nil. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.; president, the Mayor (Mr A. W. Owles); vice-chairman, Mr P. D. Muirson; vice-presidents, Messrs T. Adnams, A. W. Scarr, S. Grammar, Dr. W. E. Stevens, Dr. W. T. Glasgow, Messrs A. P. Hopkins, J. Gamble, L. W. Hudson, A. W. Dunkley, J. H. Shaw, F. J. L. Scott, J. Orsborno, J. Nuttall, J. C. Scott; conductor, to be advertised for; bandmaster, Mr W. Stevens; band sergeant, Mr C. Cross; coporal, Mr Gribben; lance-corporal, Mr J. 11. Scott; committee, Messrs A. Clark, H. E. Evans, J. E. Scott, S. Terriss, J. Gribben; secretary and treasurer, Mr B. Dean; librarian and custodians, Messrs Evans and Clark..

The secretary reported that . owing to the recent fire it would be necessary to replace an.E Flat bass and bass drum that were destroyed. For the purpose, the Borough Council held in trust for the band a sum of £55. In reply to the secretary of the South Brighton Gala Committee, it was decided to say that the Band would play at the Gab. from 2.30 p.m. to 8 p.m., for the sum of £9, but would refund as a donation to the gala, the sum of 30s. In recognition of his good services, the secretary was voted an honorarium of £2 2s, which he handed back as a donation to the band funds. Social. The members and friends of the New Brighton Association Football Club held a most enjoyable social evening in the Joyland Theatre. The programme included dances, games, and vocal and instrumental items, the last-named by Mrs Spence, Miss M. P. Hopkins, |Mr J. Spence, Mr A. W. Owles, and Mr J. Spence, jun. During the evening the Mayor, who is patron of the Club, presented the players of the 6th grade, who won the six-a-side tourney, with a cup suitably engraved, and medals, and congratulated them upon their success. The president (Mr W. E. Leadley), on behalf of the members, presented the secretary, Mr H. W. Wilkins, with' a clock. Country Visitors. The Leeston, Southbridge. and district schools held their annual < picnic on the beach yesterday.
