SOUTH CANTERBURY J.C.
TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME. The South Canterbury Jockey CluVs Spring Meeting will open at the Washdyke racecourse to-day and conclude to-morrow. The card for to-day's proceedings reveals very satisfactory iields. with a good representation of horses from most of the Riecarton and southern stables. The Washdyke fixtures have invariably proved popular, and as the weather pi onuses to be I'nvourablo, a largo gathering is anticipated from the various centres. For the convonence of Chris tehureh patrons u special train will leaive this morning at 8 o'clock, arriving back in tiie City at 10.11 p.m. 'Hie same arrangement will iie followed to-morrow. The first race is timed to start at 12 uoor. and the programme will 'be carried out as under: — OTAIO HAND! HAP, ot 120 rovs, IJm. Thorndale ~ 10 11 Kaifcalm .. 9 4 Pclio .. 9 12 Snatcher .. 9 3 Gold Mint .. 0 11 Green Cloth 9 1 Shandro .. 9 9 Kory O'Jlore 9 0 Koauau .. 9 5 'Die above contestants to bo ridden by hurdle horsemen should provide an interesting race. Thorndale, who will be ridden by A. E. Ellis, has not been overburdened, in face of his recent victories, and it is hard to go past him to be the likely favourite. Peho will show improvement on her hist month's running, and she and Gold Mint will probably offer most opposition to the top weight. SPRING STAKES, of 120 sovs. sf. Amorist .. 8 8 Sax Airini .. 8 5 Arikiwai ..8 8 Silk Stockings 8 5 Smithereens 8 8 Noteworthy 7 9 Eyed Ovit . . 8 8 Pound Note 7 9 Attractive Star Raid ..7 9 Lady 8 5 Merivnlo .. 7 6 Karifane .. 8 5 Pledge ..76 Lady Dilatory 8 5 Rigmarole .. 7 6 Miss Trillion 8 5
This race, for two-year-olds and upwards that haivo never won a flat race exceeding 75 sovs at time of starting, will see the two-year-old, Noteworthy, again in action, and his fair performances suggest his possibilities of breaking his maiden status to-day. Another of the same age in Merivale has not yet faced a starter, but she has shown a turn of speed on the track. Of tho older brigade. Miss Trillion, Eyed Ova, and Arikiwai read the best, but it will most likely bo found that the public will lend their support to Noteworthy, with Mi*s Trillion and Arikiwai next in favour. TESCHEMAKER HANDICAP, of 300 sovs. Sot Sail (If. A'oight) .. ..9 0 Battlement (A. E. Ellis ) ..87 Rascal (C. Emerson) .. ..8 1 Sir Roy (D. Cotton; .. .. 7 11 Front Rank CW. Brown) . . ..711 Ark OV. Cooper) , . ..77 Assurance (R. CoVeriy) .. ..7 5 Fresco (S. Wilson) .. ..7 3 The principal event of the day ha* u good quality field engaged, and speculation is certain to be well divided. Set Sail represents high class, and if she has at all improved since the New Zealand Cup Meeting, she will take part in the finish. Battlement Could do the trick if the change of environment has had the desired effect on his racing temperament, and he will not go out at a big price. Rascal is an unknown quantity over the journey, biit Sir Hoy has proved himself a solid (performer over ten furlongs, and with his comparatively easy impost he should attract a lot of attention. Front Rank has gone the right Way during tho past fe:v weeks, and it would not be surprising to see her tho ultimate favourite. Ark Royal, considered a likely Derby candidate earlier in the season and a probable runner in the Auckland Cup, will carry plenty of southern support. To reduce the starters to three, the names of Front Rank, Sir Roy, and Ark Royal are suggested.
TYOHO HACK HANDICAP, of 125 soy*, (if. Royal Tractor 9 0 Grey Wells .. 7 9 | Solgele ..88 Donne ..79 Bronstell .. 8 0 Lady Dilatory 7 5' Attrnct .. 7 10 Prnlillman ..74 Monev Mine 7 10 Lady Swinton 7 0 Wild Work .. 7 10 Thurso ..7 0
It' Solgele could be depended on seeing out the distance, lie would trouble the opposition iii this event, us he commands raHe speed over a short journey, but has failed boyorid five furlongs Donne is a solid galloper, while Bronstell ran three creditable races at Kiccarton la.st month. Present indications point to Donne, Bronstell being in most public request. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP, of 180 sovs.' lm. Nincompoop 8 13 Moratorium 7 10 Martariua .. 8 6 Ophir .. 710 Guy SonnSt .. 8 0 Goldtown .. 7 8 Margaret Battle Colours 7 7 Birney Tl3 Flaming Bay 7 7 Lucy Locket 712 Oarmino ~ 7 7 Battle Colours has attracted much attention of late by his track essays at Riccarton and his painstaking ownertrainer will jproduce the half-brother to Receipt in tip-top order. Gay Sonnet won over seven furlongs at Dunedin from good company, and she should see out the extra furlong. Nincompoop will not be overlooked, as he is apparently seen at> his best first time out. The issue may rest between Battle Colours, Nincompoop, and Gay Sonnet. MAIDEN PLATE, of 120 sovs. Weight 8-10. 6f. Amorist Money Mart Rhondda Fairness Princess St. Nicholas Malmsey Mafalda Wayward Martafiha Claret Cap The above ©vent, for three-year-olds and upwards that have not won a flat race at time of starting, will solicit much interest by the fact that the much boomed three-year-old colt, Martarma, forms one of the field. He also figures in the President's Handicap, but will contest this race in preference. With a reasonably small field engaged, he should not lie at a disadvantage over the early part, and with his undoubted finishing powers, he should be on hand when the post is reached. Malmsey commands a lot of speed and she and Wayward, from Mason's stable, may cause most anxiety to the followers of the big Marfan colt. KEKRYTOWN HACK HANDICAP, of 130 sovs. 7f. Money Peer 9 0 Exide . 712 Hoylnke .. 8 11 Quarterdeck.. 7 11 Happv Queen 8 7 Kaxette .. <J u •Tarretlere .. 8 5 Rhondda .. 711 Fair EtehanfH 8 3 Form points to Money Peer again making a return, but ho wil] have to be at his Iwst to staive off the English colt, Hoylake, while Jarretiere appears the likely contestant of the remainder. FLYING HANDICAP, of 200 eovs. 6f Money Order 9 6 Sagittarins ..8 5 Stormy ~91 Oold Brick , 8 3 Receipt . . 9 1 Rob ..82 Bnldowa .. 8 11 Mime ~ 7 6 Rascal .. 8 9 Kenmore .. 7 4 Moorland .. 8 6 Silver Coot .. 7 0 The concluding event should bo productive of much speculation, as the field contains some smart performers over three-quarters of a mile. Money Order Ims only to reproduce his excellent track form of late to take a prominent part in the final issne, and the same may be said of Sagittarius, who is capable of keeping pace with the top weight throughout the journey. Silver Coot, en the minimum, encourages support, and it will probably transpire that this trio will be at the head of the totalisator figures.
