PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE
A SUCCESSFUL YEAR, The annual report of the Philosophical Institute, to be presented at the annual meeting on December 7th, states that it is with great regrot that the Council records the deaths of three very highly esteemed members of tho Institute—Mr C. W. Purnell, Mr J. Hardcastle, and Mr T. V. Hodgson. The N.Z. Institute Research Grant Committeo had again been appointed from Canterbury members, Professors C. Chilton, C. C. Farr, and E. Speight, Dr. P. W. Hilgendorf, and Mr A. M. Wright! The New Zealand Institute had accepted an invitation to hold the next %ienco j Congress in Auckland during January. The balance-sheet shows that £132 6s' I has been received for members' subscriptions; £BB 13s 3d expended on the library, and that the'year closes with a credit of £6113s 6d in tho ordinary account. Contributions amounting to £4l 15s have been received towards the publication of the "National History of Canterbury," £8 13 8 had been spent in the preparation of maps and illustrations for that work, leaving a credit balance of £229 8s 0d available for its publication. In addition, the amount of £7l 5s has been promised towards the expenses. The life members' subscription fund shows a credit of £257 4 S 6d.
