THE BELLAMY'S POLL.
PARLIAMENT AND LIQUOR. Under section 270 of the Legislative Act, 1903, it is provided that in the Erst session of each Parliament, and on the fourth Tuesday after the Address-in-Reply has been determined, the clerk of each House Bhall take a poll of the members on the question whether or not liquor shall be sold within the precincts of Parliament. Id 1912 and 1923 these requirements could not be carried out as on both occasions the first sessions were so short—ten days in one case and 15 in the other—that Parliament was not sitting on the fourth Tuesday after the determination of the Address-in-Reply. The result of the poll in respect of the present Parliament was announced on .July 28th, 1926, as follows:
Ayes. Noes. Legislative Council ... 24. 18 House of Representatives 60 16 84 29 Majority in favour of the sale of liquor within the precincts of Parliament, 55. The previous poll was announced on August 4th, 1920, as follows: Ayes. Noes. Legislative Council ... 24 17 House of Representatives 50 24 74 41 Majority in favour, 33. The Nineteenth Parliament's decision was announced on July 28th, 1915, as follows: Ayes. Noes. Legislative Council. ... 19 13 House of Representatives 41 31 60 44 Majority in favour, 16. The personnel of Parliament, of course, has not been the same in the period covered by these figures, but it is somewhat remarkable that the present Parliament, of those in respect of which the result of the polls is given, shows the greatest majority in favour of intoxicants beins sold "within the precincts."
