ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. The Rev. W. Marshall, president of the Ashburton No-License Council, left for Wellington last evening to attend the meeting of the New Zealand Alliance. Motoring. The Ashburton branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association held its monthly meeting on Wednesday evening, when there were present: Messrs N. L. Wood (chairman), V. W. Bussell, W. Osman, W. W. Foster, J. Bishop, G. Carson, and J. Bathgate. In reply to a letter sent to him from the local branch of the C.A.A., relative to the proposed allocation of the petrol tax as between the North and South Islands, the Hon. Mr Nosworthy advised that he would refer the matter to the Minister for Public Works. It was resolved to place direction signs at the junction of the South Main highway and Maronan road at Eangitata bridge, and on the main highway at the Mt. Somors railway station corner. Daphne Lodge. There was a fair attendance at the fortnightly meeting of Daphne (Rebekab) Lodge, No. 34,1.0.0. F., on Wednesday evening. N.G. Sister E. Hopkins presided. Three sisters wero reported sick, and one new member was proposed. Progress reports with regard to the Christmas tree were prosented by the Social Committee. It was decided to hold the next initiation ceremony early in the New Year. Vital Statistics. Ashburton has exceeded Timaru and the West Coast in its figures for births during the month of November, and there is an increase of IS over last rear's figures for this district. The deaths for the month show a decline ot three on the figures for November, 1920 and the marriages have increased by the same number. The- figures m tho Ashburton registration district for last month, compared with those of November, 192G, are as follows:—Births, 30 121: deaths, 13 (16); marriages, 8 (5). Two marriages were solemnised by the registrar. Bankruptcies. There were two petitions filed in bankruptcy by Ashburton residents last month, one being by a mechanic and the other bv a contractor. * Card Tournament. One of a series of weekly euchre tournaments to augment the funds of the Hampstead Hall Society's bazaar, which is to be hold in February, was held in the Hampstead Hall last evening, when thero was a fair attendance. The ladies' prize was won by Mrs W. Harvey, while that for the men was divided between Mr B. Coward and Mr Turner. , j Heavy Rain.

Further raiu fell heavily during the early hours of yesterday morning, and at times it reached the force of a downpour. A total of 52 points were recorded at the Domain weather station November was one of the wettest months on record at Ashburton Forks, the total registration taken by Mr Angus Horsey being 5.3 m. The heaviest fall was on the 30th, when 100 points were registered. Mortality Among Sheep.

The worst aspeet of the present cold and atomy weather is the mortality

which it is causing among shorn sheep. Two farmers in the Methven district who turned their sheep out of the shearing shed on Saturday each found close on 100 dead ewes in tho paddock on Monday morning. One or two sheepfarmers in the Mayfield district have been equally as unfortunate, as they have also suffered to some extent in the same way as a result of the storm. In many cases shearing operations have been considerably hampered.

The Canterbury Cricket Association wrote 6tating that it could send a representative team to play at Ashburton on January 2nd and Brd.

The West Coast Association wrote asking if the Association would play its representative team at Ashburton on December 3Lsl and January 2nd. It required a guarantee of £ls towards expenses, and suggested _ a return visit from Ashburtcu during the. 1928-23 season. It was decided to v.-rito to *bo Canterbury Association mentioning tho difficulty of fulfilling engagements and the unlikelihood of players being available for a two days' match, and also asking if it would play a one-day fixture on January 3rd. The offer of the West Coast Association was nccepte'l, the guarantee being agreed to. The conditions of play for the Hawk« Cup we.re forwarded by the New Zealand Cricket Council, showing that the Assopjation was grouped with South Canterbury, and that group winners had the right to challenge the holder, hut the Management Committee had the right to arrange the order. It was necessary for the holders cf the cup to arrange challenge matches at Christmas and Xew Year. The secretary, Mr J. P. Hanratty, was thanked -for his report on the annual conference of cricket association delegates held in Christchurch.

Arising out of the decision of the conferenco, it was agreed to adopt the six-ball over instead of the eight-ball over after next Saturday.

The matter of postponing matches on December 34th and during the Christmas holidays was left to the Competitions and Draw Committee, with power to defer anr match. The credit balance wcs reported to he about £3O.

v RAKAIA. The rainfall at Kakaia for the month of November was 2.79 inches. Rain fell on sixteen days, the heaviest fall occurring on tho 15th, when the gauge recorded 78 points.
