SPORTING.

TURF GOSSIP. Nomination* and first forfeits for the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting close to-morrow. Nominations for the Waipa and Manawatu Meetings close to-morrow. Nominations for the Waipnkurau Meeting close on Monday. Acceptances for the Tauniarunui Meeting close on Monday. The weights for the Oamaru Meeting will appear on Tuesday next, and acceptances close on the following Friday. Centrepiece has made great strides in the past few weeks, and can be depended upon to run prominently before the Auckland Meeting terminates. Battle Colours and Moorland were responsible for a solid gallop at Riccarton yesterdav, tho former having an advantage "over his stable companion at the end of seven furlongs, run in exceptionally iast time. It will not be long before he furnishes a return of his outlay to his owner-trainer, D. Campbell, who has been very patient with the Solforino gelding. The three-year-old filly Scrambler, by Panmure from Scrimmage, has been disposed of by Sir G. Clifford to R. Adam son, who recently moved from the West Coast to Riccarton. Scrambler failed to win any money for the Chokcbore stable, but she is endowed with a reasonable amount of speed, and should pay her way at the West Coast holiday fixtures, whither sho will be taken by her new owner.

Five horsemen, who will be taking part at the Feilding Meeting this week, will leave Wellington to-night, and be on hand at the South Canterbury Meeting to-morrow. They are A. E. Ellis, D. Watts, L. A. Pine, S. Wilson, and B. J. Mackie. Ellis has been engaged to ride Battlement, Gold Brick, Thorndale, Malmsey, and Arikiwai; S. Wilson will be on Fresco, and one of Mackic's mounts will be Nincompoop.

Although considered an off morning as far as fast work is concerned, several horses with engagements at Timaru were given serviceable tasks at Biccarton yesterday. The No. 7 grass track was in use, but in the absence of indication posts affecting this particular track, it was impossible to accurately time the gallops. As at present, the posts for the adjoining track have to be nsod, and as a natural consoquencesome record-breaking work was accomplished. An improvement in the matter of indication posts would be much appreciated at Biccarton.

Biccarton stables will probably be well represented at the Manawatu and Marton Meetings. F. D. Jones and B. Emerson each intend to take a team, provided the horses concerned show sufficient encouraging form at Washdyke this week to warrant arrangements being finalised. Martarma is an unlikely starter in the President's Handicap at Washdyke to-morrow, but will contest the Maiden Plate, in which he will be ridden by C. Emerson. The Martian colt looks in rare racing condition, and yesterday, after giving Oriflamb a good break at the start, easily beat him home over seven furlongs in good time. Fresco has lately shown glimpses of his past good form, and yesterday had an advantage over Margaret Birney at the end of a well-run seven furlong journey. He is to contest the principal evont at Washdyke to-morrow, and will be ridden by the Trentham apprentice, S. Wilson.

Pledge, who is engaged in the Spring Stakes at the South Canterbury Meeting to-morrow, is a two-year-old filly by Kilbroney from Love Token, dam of Sartist and Sarty. She is the pro-, perty of her breeder, Mr G. Fulton. A reminder is given that a special train will leave Christchurch at 8 o'clock to-morrow morning for the South Canterbury Meeting at Washdyke, returning to the City at 10.11 p.m. The same arrangement will be carried out on Saturday. Front Rank again galloped well oyer seven furlongs on the plough at Riccarton yesterday morning, and she should worthily represent the stable in the Teschemaker Handicap at Timaru to-morrow.

Much has been written recently of the two-year-old Monetize, by Paper Money from Ohiwia, bred by Mr W. H. Gaisford, and recently sold to a Hastings sportsman. This youngster had lately startled track-watchers at Hastings, but, unfortunately, whilst playing, Ticked his off fore fetlock joint, and will have to be put aside until later in the season.

A flight of hurdles, 10ft long and 4ft 6in high, could not be regarded as an unconsidered trifle, and neither could such be conveniently carried under one arm. The caretaker of the Takapuna Jockey Club's course relates that hurdles (not more trestles) have disappeared periodically from the North Shore ground, and it may be assumed that the marauders have chosen to operate at night rather than in daylight. Mr J. D. Donovan, of Hastings, has been appointed starter to the Wairoa Racing Club, which will hold its annua] fixture on January 17th and 19th. On his recent return trip to New Zoaland from Sydney, White Fang met with an accident to his off hind leg that will keep him off the tracks for at least another week. When recovered he will be shipped to Gisborne, and in future be trained by his old trainer, C. Wright. "White Fang will race at the Auckland Summer Meeting next.

Comical, who was a big disappointment last winter when tried at steeplecha«ing,.'looks in rare buckle at present. He will not be raced until the early autumn, and then as a preparation for winter events.

D. McCanley has just broken in at Trentham the two-year-old chestnut filly by Violoncello—lrish Maid. This filly replaced the one by Comedy King from Tandale, purchased at the Trentham sales last July by Mr W. A. Fuller. At the time of the sale, the vendor (Mr J. Donald) stated that ho would take back the filly at the end of her racing career if so desired, and as she hurt herself and could not be trained. Mr Donald has taken her back, and sent down the Violoncello filly to take her place.

I TROTTING NOTES. Acceptances for the Wellington Trotting Club's Meeting close to-morrow (Friday). Owners are reminded that nominations for the Westport Trotting Club's Summer Meeting close to-night at 3 o'clock This fixture is popular with Canterbury owners and it is expected that a big number of horses will be taken there for the Meeting on December 26th and 27th. Arrangements have been made for horses to be taken by boat from Greymouth to Westport so that trainers will not now bo worried a great deal over transport arrangements as has been the case on some previous occasions. The Westport Club offers good inducement for owners to make the trip as there is not a race on the programme of less value than 110 sovs, while the principal event, the Westport Trotting Club Handicap, carries a stake of 300 sovs, including a silver cup. Nominations for the South Wairarapa Trotting Club's Meeting close tomorrow, when nominations for the Gore T.C.'s Meeting also fall due. Jewel Pointer will give an exhibition of pacing over a mile at the Waikajo Trotting Club's Meeting on Saturday During the present season Mr Moodabe, owner of but in Jewel Pointer and Amaris, has won £3950. I

Harry Audubon, who has not been a paying proposition during the past twelve months, is to join It. Townleys team at Dunedin. R. Pollock, who previously trained the gelding, is now attached to M. B. Edwards's stable.

Billy Sea has rejoined A. Hendrit sen's team at Halswell.

The track at Addington was in good order yesterday morning, but although a big number of horses engaged at coming meetings were exercised nothing of a sensational nature was recorded.

D. Bennett has again taken Trimmer in hand after a short spell and the pacer will not require much work to get him to his best. Golden T>evon is in work again after a let-up and should be a useful stakeearner during the Christmas and New Year Meetings.

The West Coast-owned Cannonball, in A. Coxls Addington stable, is going nicely in his work. He is a highgrade trotter and should soon add to Ins winning account.

In the Rowe Handicap, confined to 4.36 class unhoppled trotters, at the Auckland Meeting, W. J. Tomkinsou has Young Blake and Elzear engaged, whilo Happy Rosa, formerly in his Addington stable but latterly racing with success in New South Wales, also figures in the list. The field for the Champion Handicap, one mile and a quarter, 2.435 class, at Auckland, represents as select a lot as can be got together in New Zealand. There are fifteen nominations and a meeting between Great Bingen, Concliff, Jack Potts, Jewel Pointer, Nelson Fame, and Cardinal Logan over a mile and a quarter would cause the keenest interest to be taken.

The Auckland Trotting Club has decided to install an electric totalisator and a members' stand at Alexandra Park, Epsom, the total cost not to exceed £40,000. A special committee consisting of Messrs J. Rowe, C. J« Schnauer, T. Buxton, and the club's architect (Mr N. Wade) has been set up to make an inspection of such totalisators as are now in use in the North Island. It is expected that these improvements will be available for the Cup Meeting in 1928. Press Association.

FEILDING J.C. JOY BIRD SCORES IN CUP. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.). FEILDING, November 30. There was beautiful weather for the first day of the Feilding Jockey Club's Spring Meeting and a large attendance. The track was in perfect condition, and there was good racing. The totalisator investments were £25,777 against £20,736 on the same day last year. Results: — fWAITUNA HURDEES HANDICAP, of 200 sovs. ljm. 3. MISTER GAMP 9-0 .. R. 0. Miles 1 1. The Spring Meeting of the Feilding Jockey Club was opened to-day in fine weather. Fields were good and the racing interesting. In the Cap, Joy Bird won in a six-horse field. Euphonium and Wanderlust dead-heat-ing for second place. There was a. wonderful finish In the Flying Handicap, heads only separating the placed horses—Covent Garden, Sarchee", and Epistle—and the other*. There ww • is* conteet in the Feilding

f Stakes, the brilliant Ktosr winning from Silvermine and Lady Cavendish. The club had an exceptionally successful day /Jn the totalisator, putting through £20,777, as against £20,740 on the first day last year, an increase of £5037. L. G. Morris was in good form in the saddle, winning three races, and J. Barry rode two winners. Walton* Hurdles. Pouri and Troilus were the favourites for the Hurdles. Pouri made all tho running, and in the early stages was attended by Star Area, Troilus, and Maidos. With a round to go, Mister Gamp moved forward. Pouri led down the back the last time from Troilus, Mister Gamp, and Star Area. Pouri and Troilus were together at the half-mile, and were joined on the turn by Mister Gamp, with Star Area following. Troilus was beaten entering the straight. Pouri and Mister Gamp jumped the last fence together, and in a close finish Mister Gamp won by a head. Star Area was three lengths away third, with Revel another two longths back fourth. Troilus was fifth and Maidos sixth, and then came Braeman and Sir Fanciful. Touri ran a good race, being made n lot ol use of. He did not jump too well at somo of his fences. Star Area made ft fine show for a beginner. He was held back early, and the experience should benefit him. Troilus found the journey just a bit too far. At a mile and a half he looked certain to be hard. Mister Gamp was always going well, and he was ridden with judgment. Revel put up a great run over the last half-mile to finish fourth. The others had no chance. Aorangl Trial Pl*te. Broad Acre and Plane were the only two at all well backed in tho maiden field of sixteen startors. Broad Acre, Plane, and Liaison began best, with Irish Lad and Aurora Borealis showing at the head of the bunch. Whisogne, Limosa, and Courageous got badly off. Broad Acre was clear round the home turn, and led into the straight from Plane, Liaison, Aurora Borealis, Maui, Irish Lad, and Royal Picture, with Whisogne and Courageous running up fast. Broad Acre was never seriously threatened, winning by the best part of three lengths. Courageous came vory fast, and beat Plane for second by half a length. About two lengths further baok Liaison was fourth, bunched with lioyal Picture, Torgine, Maul, and Whisogno. Broad Acre was the winner all the way. Plane had every chance. Courageous, a three-year-old golding by Thurnham—Bonne Bouche, was responsible for a great race, He began very badly, being one of the last to leave the mark. His finishing run was remarkable. As there were only fourteen tickets on his chance his dividend was very substantial. Liaison ran a good race, but had every chance, and Maui was only fair. Royal Picture came late on the scene. Torgine ran a credjtable race, and was finishing on well. Whisogne showod plenty of speed once he got going, but he was too far back to have any chance. If he leaves the mark he will be dangerous. Irish Lad ran quite a fair race. The Cup. Rowley, who broke down whilo training at Feilding, wan missing from tho Cup field, and of the Bix starters Paitonu was a solid favourite, with Euphonium a fair second choice. Wanderlust was first away,, and leu through the straight from Joy Bird, Euphonium, Novar, Tresham, and Paitonu. Joy Bird ran up to Wanderlust at the seven furlongs post, and Paitonu came from the rear, thiß trio goins out in front. Euphonium being next. Joy Bird was clear on the home turn and led into the straight, going on to win by three lengths from Euphonium and Wanderlust, who crossed the line on level terms. Novar was- fourth, Tresham fifth, and Paitonu last. , . Joy Bird won comfortably in the finish, but Wanderlust was handled with poor judgment, and should have been a hard horso to beat. Euphonium mot with some interference six furlongs from home, but he could have won had he been good enough. Neither Novar nor Tresham had any chance, and Paitonu pulled himself to pieces in the first six furlongs. Kowhal Handicap. As there was an insufficient number of scratchings In the Kowhai Hack Handicap, the race was run in divisions. First Acre and Fee Simple wore firm favourites from Vigilance, and the first pair, being in the same division, made a price for Vigilance. In the first lot, Hypnotic, Tanagra, and Mandarine made the running from Fee Simple and Royal Aero, with Tone a long way out. Royal Acre was doing it easily in behind the leaders at the top of the straight, but he had to be ridden right out to beat Mandarine by a long neck. Tone flew into third place half a length back from an impossible position, and looked a good thing beaten. Lin Arlington, Hypnotic, Fee Simple, Volplane, and Essential finished in a heap close up. Essential was not too well drawn, although better than the winner, and ran a fair race. It looked as if Tone should have won easily. . In the second division Vigilance, from No. 1, got a clear break in the first two furlongs, but then Powhiri, Night Witch, and Kawhakina ran past her and led to the straight, where Some Lad was handy. Somo Lad was in front half-way up the running, but Vigilance came through and battled him out of the money by a short neck. Powhiri was two lengths away third. Kawhakina was fourth, and then came Ganymede and Sovena. Tho result was rocent form to a nicety. Ganymede received a bump entering the straight which settled any chance he had. Feilding Stakes. Scratchings reduced the field in the 22nd Fellding Stakes to nine runners. Limited was a slightly better favourite than Kiosk, and they were well ahead of the"otherß, Silvermine being the actual third favourite. Limited, Lysander, Silvermlne, and Kiosk moved out first, and whon settled down Lysander went back. Limited and Silvermine leading round the turn from Kiosk, with Royal Duke moving up fast on'the outer. Limited and Silvermine led into the straight from Kiosk, Lady Cavendish, Royal Duke, and Lysander. Kiosk came out a furlong from home and went on to win by a length from Silvermine, who beat Lady Cavendish by three-parts of a length. Lysander was about two lengths away fourth, with Limited fifth, Licinius sixth, and Eoysl Duke seventh. Kiosk won like a racehorse, and had too much speed for the opposition. Silvermine, 'who was making his first appearance *of the season, ran brilliantly, and is, on thiß performance, one of the smartest sprinters in commission. He carried lib overweight. Lady Cavendish ran a good race, and so did Lysander, who lost a good deal of ground in the middle stages. Licinms finished on well, and Royal Duke showed speed.

Flying Handicap. Whenuanui wa» scratched for the Flying Handicap. Covent Garden was a solid lav-, ourite, Arrow Lad being second choice, with plenty of money for Eoyal Damon. There was a delay at the start, and when let go Partaga dwelt badly, and Arrow Lad got squeezed back. Oovent Garden began very smartly, and soon hit the rails, being clear at the end of a furlong from Mireusonta, Royal Damon, and Epistle. On the turn Mireusonta and Epistle were up with Oovent Garden, with Royal Damon and Huikai next, Sarchee and Arrow Lad moving up, and The Lamb being last. Oovent Garden drifted back as they ran for the straight, where Royal Damon, Mireusonta, and Epistle were in front, with Sarchee close up and Covent Garden on the rails. There was a magnificent race to the post. With fifty yards to go six or seven were in line, and at the post Covent Garden got up to win by a short head from Sarchee, who beat Epistle by a similar margin. Only heads away came Mireusonta,' Royal Damon, The Lamb, Royal Land, and Arrow Lad. Arrow Lad was nearly down in the straight, and Bright Knight nearly fell over him. Royal Damon had every chance. Arrow Lad was in trouble all the way, and it is remarkable how he kept from falling in the straight. The Lamb, who was last at the three furlongs post, finished so well up that he looks an early winner. Fltzroy Handicap. Expense was the favourite in the 'back sprint, with solid support for Lady Limond and Vast Acre. At the start The Raider was left standing, and Desert Lad and Lady Limond were the last to move. Vast Acre was soon in front and led to the' turn from Royal Time, Lady Cynthia, Expense, Miss Mercia. Nad Lucky Days. The order of the leaders was unchanged to the straight, where Vaßt Acre was still clear, and she came on to score by nearly three lengths from Expense, who beat Lucky Days by just over a length. Miss Mercia was fourth, and close up came Lady Limond, Desert Laa, The Raider, Borsalene, and Royal Time. Vast Acre drew the outer, but simply spreadeagled her field, incidentally running under her 9-7 1-5 of a second faster than Covent Garden in the open race. Hor performance was remarkably good. Expense Baa no chance with the winner, but ran a creditable race. Note should be made of the forward positions at the finish of the three that got left— Lady Limond, The Raider, and Desert Lad. The Raider's performance after standing quite an appreciable time stock still was outstanding. Lady Limond should benent greatly by the race. Borsalene ran well up to form. Klwltea High-Weight. With Wanderlust and Vigilance out of the concluding event, backers went solidly for Kilmiss, Orarone. and Qratrix. Ruanui . was first out, and led from Queen's Choice. Gleninnis, Vivo, and Kilmiss. Down the back Oratrix ran up, and on the turn Ruanui led from Kilmiss, Oratrix, Queen's Choice, Glen innis. Vivo, and Bright Knight. Once in line Kilmiss challenged, but Ruanui held his own and won by the best part of a length. Kilmias was three lengths ahead of Vivo, with Oratrix fourth, followed by Queen's Choice. Lady Anstruther, and Gleninnis. The winner, who is a three-year-old brother to The Thorn, showed promise as a two-year-old. but did not go on with it. He was not at all fancied to-day, but he won well and looks like being a good one to follow. Vivo was not too lucky in the running, or she would have been closer up. Oratrix looked a winner on the turn, but did not run on. Oraione was not out early, and was never dangerous. ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY. (FBEBB ASSOCIATION TELEGEAM.) FEILDING, November 30.
