This promise, made laughingly to the London Watercress Queen, Mrs Elizabeth James, by her sons and daughters, was fulfilled at her funeral recently. A huge wreath of watercress lay on the coffin of Mrs James, a familiar figure at Covent Garden for more than 50 years, who cultivated vast beds of cress at Hurstbourne, Hampshire. A limousine brought wreaths, a donkey barrow brought a load of flowers. ■ The wreath of watercress only was lowered into the grave, but many friends of the deceased dropped oosies of flowers on the coffin as they filed past.
