ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. Mr W. Bryant left for Dunedin yes-, terday to represent the Ashburton Hospital Board on the Waipiata Sanatorium Committee. Detective E. M. Thomas, Christchurch, is visiting Ashburton on police business. East Ashburton School Committee. The East Ashburton School Committee met on Monday, Mr W. S. Kerr presiding. Correspondence was received from the Education Board regarding subsidy on fencing and septic tank. It was resolved that the Board's proposal that the committee contribute £125 towards the cost of installing a septic tank was too much for the Committee to provide, and an offer of £SO was as much as it could make. It was decided that the use of the tennis court should be limited to pupils only until 4 p.m. The headmaster (Mr H. W. Garton) reported that the roll number was now 505, and the average attendance 460. The school would break up for the summer holidays on December 16th. Dux medals would be presented _to the girl and boy who obtain the highest marks at the final examination for the year. The report was adopted. Arrangements in connexion with the school excursion to Timaru on December ,Bth were completed. St. Stephen's Girls' Club. St. Stephen's Parish Hall was well filled on Monday night when members of the Girls' Club gave a most enjoyi able concert in aid of the funds for St. Saviour's Orphanage, Christchurch, and the Anglican Church mission work in India. The included | vocal and instrumental music, a short comedy, and an exhibition of club swinging. Items were given by Miss Audrey Ruddock (piano solo), Master Desmond Choata (songs), Miss G. Galbraith (musical monologue), Mrs D. Lawson (songs), Miss L. Fisher (club swinging), Mr W. B. Thomas (songs), Miss Page (songs), and a short play by members of the Club. The Rev. J. P. Wiseman at the close, thanked the audience, and referred to the good work of the members of the Girls' Club in connexion with the St. Saviour's Girls' Orphanage, and mission work in India. On behalf of" Miss Nicoll, he presented prizes to Miss E. Smith (the secretary of the Club), and Miss Kean for having been the most regular attendants at the club's weekly meetings throughout the year.Essay Competition. Junior—W. Cunliffe (Borough School) 1, M. Cameron (Pendarves) 2, Iris Porter (Borough School) 3. Obituary. One of Ashburton's best-known citizens, Mr A. L. Zouch, died at his residence, Tancred street, yesterday morning, at the age of 40 years. Mr Zouch had been in indifferent health for over twelve months, but his end was somewhat sudden. He was a native of the town. Although not actively associated with any public bodies ho was keenly interested in the welfare of the borough, and was a supporter of any good cause. Shorthand-Typistes' Examination. Advice has been received by the Principal of the Technical School, from the Public Service Commissioner, that the following pupils were successful in the shorthand-typistes' entrance examinations, held at the School on November 19th:—Misses E. Pilbrow, B. E. Bell, E. E. Whiting, L. E. Wills, L. H. Miller, D. L A. Haslett, E. M. White, and E. L White. Eiverside. The members of the Eiverside tennis club held a combined doubles tournament, when there was a large attendance of players. The winners were: Miss M. Wilson and C. Wilson. METHVEN. For some considerable time the ladies of the various sections of the Methven parochial district have held functions in aid of their stalls, and the whole was finalised by a big effort in the form of a fancy fair which was held in the Methven Pub lie Hall on Thursday. Being the usual there was a very large attendance or supporters from the country districts, in addition to township citizens, and hroughout the day the stall-holders were particularly busy disposing ot their wares. As a resu t of the fair the sum of £l2O was realised During the evening an auction sale of Produce etc., left over, was conducted bv Mr W S. Jones, of the National Mortgage and Agency Co.'s staff. A cabaret completed the function, excellent music being supplied by Ltras bourn's band, from Ashburton extxas being contributed by Mrs Alex Law. rence and Miss Mauger, while Mr Owers acted as master of ceremonies Many competitions were "Id, the givers of prizes and winners being as follows:-Cabinet of cigarettes (Mr Stone) won by Mr T. The monthly meeting of the Hinds School Committee was hold on Monday, evening, when Mr W. P. Musson presided over a full attendance of members. The master's report showed that the roll was 75, and the attendance good. Mr John Moody, agricultural instructor, and Mr John blank; attendance officer, had visited the school during the month. The inspector's ref>ort was read, and it was decided to congratulate the staff on the excellent results obtained. The resignation of Miss E. O Gunn was received with regret, and it was decided to place on record tho valuable service rendered to the school while she was assistant mistress. The purchase of school prizes and a lawn mower was left in the hands of the headmaster. It was decided to hold the prize-giving and break-up on December 16th. The Rev. E. Hanna and Mrs Hanna are now settied in the vicarage. A choir bus been formed, which is showing promise of good work. Upwards of 20 names have been received for a gkis' friendly society, and a branch of the Mothers' Union will be started early next year. The contractor has finished tho formation of the deviation at Hinds. The arrivj»i ot a stone-crusher for broken metal is awaited. RAKAIA. The following rinks will represent Rakaia in the annual town v. country match of the Ashburton Bowling Sub-Centre which is to be played on the Rakaia green on Saturday,. commencing at 2.15 p.m.:—Stubbs, Cooke, Milne, Holmes (s); Black, Rapley, Tatterson, Nickolls (s); Weaver, Palmer, Henderson, Hardy (s).
