December 26—Gore T.C. Annual. TURF GOSSIP. Nominations for the Manawatu Summer Meeting close on Friday. General entries for the Auckland Summer Meeting, and first forfeits tcr the Great -Northern Foal Stakes, Derby, and Royal Stakes, are due at 6 p.m. on Friday next. The acceptances For the Auckland Cup and Handicap close on December lbtn. The South Canterbury Jockey Club were rewarded with very »t«*«« ! * 0 g acceptances for their Meeting, to be heldat Washdyke on Friday urday of this week. J he ,.P nnCl event, the Teschemaker Handicap has a good-class field of eight engaged the defections including tfa)<kwa. laboo, and Pink Note The first-named however, will contest the Flying Handicap, for which only one of those Handicapped has failed to pav up. All the .other races have filled well, and there is material to make the opening days programme brimful of interesting racing. Silk Stockings, engaged in the Spring Stakes at Washdyke, on Friday is an aged mare by Solferino from the Pilgrim's Progress mare Silk Gown, and & trained by N. C. Price, at New Brighton, for Mr J. Beban, of Christchurch. She was galloped yesterday with Miss Trillion and Malmsey, but w backward in racing condition, and was beaten off at the end of four furlongs. The North Island-owned Koauau has done well since the New Zealand Cup Meeting, and is to contest the Otaio Handicap at Timaru on Friday. Martarma has been accepted for in both the Maiden Plate and President s Handicap on the first day of the South Canterbury Meeting, and a decision as to which race he will contest will not be made until Friday. It is probable, however that ,the latter event will he his mission, as he would be more favoured over a mile journey than .the six furlongs attached to the yet-to-win race. Bronstell will have his first outing for his new owner, Mr H. A. Rhind. in the Tycho Handicap at Timaru on Friday. The Chokebore stable will be represented at the South Canterbury Meeting by Green Cloth (sister to Centrepiece), Front Rank, Wild Work (sister to Sudden Storm and Childsplay), and Quarterdeck. Motor Smash has been suffering from a bad cold since the New Zealand Cup Meeting, and will not again be raced until the West Coast fixtures. An attractive-looking three-year-old filly by Thurnham from Lady Middleton is at present in work at Riccarton In charge of the West Coast ownertrainer, J. Adamson. Childsplay was responsible for an effortless gallop over four furlongs, the reverse way, at Riccarton yesterday morning, and Sir G. Clifford's champion filly should be- in great order when produced at the Auckland Summer Meeting. The two-year-old Merivale by Paladin from Bonaria, m W. G. Hobbss stable is evidently gifted with speed, as she reeled off half a mile at Riccarton yesterday in fast time. She is to have her first race in the Spring Stakes at Washdyke on Friday. Money Order has been executing some fast track work of late, and yesterday registered the best six furlong gallop of the morning's operations, tie has only to reproduce his recent track form to make matters uncomfortable for the remainder of the field in the Flying Handicap at Timaru on Friday. G. J. Pine's team.for the South Canterbury Meeting will comprise Silver Coot, Fair Exchange, Money Mart, and Noteworthy. The quartet have shown recent good form on the track. Magna Charta has made wonderful improvement since repining the active brigade at Riccarton, and in his first serious work yesterday since the Grand National Meeting, he covered four furlongs in comparatively creditable time. The best has not yet been seen of the big King John gelding, and he should be seen to advantage at the Auokland Summer Meeting. J B. Pearson's stable will be represented at the South Canterbury Meeting by two maidens in Miss Trillion and Malmsey, both of whom registered good gallops over four furlongs at Riccarton yesterday, R. Emerson will take Assurance, Hoylake and Lady Swinton to the Timaru fixture. The two last-named reeled off s fast five furlong task at Riccarton yesterday. The three-year-old gelding Wayward by Sutala from Egotism, and the two-year-old Rigmarole will represent the Mason stable at the South Canterbury Meeting. The former, who made a bold showing in the Hagley Handicap on the second day of the New Zealand Cup, is engaged in the Maiden Plate on Friday, and on recent track work will have to be seriously considered. It is evidently hoped that more hurdle races will be exacted from the Australian-bred Tenterfiold, as he was given a schooling {ask at Riccarton yesterday, jumping safTsfactorily after a lengthv absence from the battens He certainly looks in good order, and may earn more honours on the West Coast circuit. In all probability C. Emerson will not make the trio to the Auckland Summer Meeting, but will ass ; st at the southern fixtures. On recent performances, Rowley and Paitonu will probablv find favour with investors for the Feilding Cup to-day. According to Hastings reports, Shirley has done well since her trip to Riccarton. and her chances in the Feilding Stakes to-day are considered favourable. The consistent two-year-old Silver Rule is also engaged in the classic and represents thft best form of the younger division. The Flying Handicap at Feilding today, should provido a good contest, Bonogne incurred a 41b rehnndicap for his win at Ashhurst Inst week, nut this will prevent him from being again in public favour. Royal Damon appears to offer most opposition. Lady Limond, who has not raced since winning the Trial Plate at th* Wellington Winter Meeting, will make her reappearance in the Fitzroy Hack Handicap at Feilding to-day. Included in the field is Eorselene, who paid a sensational dividend last week, and was rehandicapped for to-day's race from 7-0 to 7-7. His Majesty's colours were carried to victory in the Chievley Park Stakes, run at Newmarket last month, by the filly Scuttle, a daughter of the Derby winner, Captain Cuttle.

The Immigrant, who won at Takapuna on Saturday, is a six-yar-olrt English-bred horse by Count Anthony from Bettyville. He was one of a batch imported by Dr. W. C. Ring, and at the sale in December. 1923, he was secured bv Mr W. S. Glenn, M.P., for 450 guineas. Mr Glenn and his trainer have shown a great deal of patience with The Immigrant, who has alwavs been a source of trouble. Three times he has been brought right, only to be turned out again, and, m consequence, he has done practically no racing. The win on Saturday, therefore, is especially pleasing. The Immigrant was taken to Australia with Le Choucas on Jamiesou's last trip, but little could be done with him there, f the horse could stand training there is littlfc doubt that he would turn out much above the average, but unfortunately it seems too much to hope for, and* the fact that Jamieson after all this time has been able to win with him is a high tribute to his training ability. The Select Stakes, run at the Newmarket (England) Meeting on October 13th, was rendered specially interesting by reason of the fact that three horses bred respectively in Germany, France, and England fought out an exciting finish. Victory rested with the German-bred horse Weissdorn (9-7), who beat the French-bred gelding Insight 11. (9-2) by a short head, with tho English-bred filly Endowment (8-9) a similar distance away, third. A perusal of the sales of yearlings held in England this year shows that 133 submitted to auction realised fourhgure amounts, and in two other instances sums running to five figures were paid. The four highest-priced yearlings and their respective purchasers were as follows; —Brown colt, by Papyrus—Sundart, by Sunstar (tho Aga Khan), U.OOOgns; chestnut filly, by Friar Marcus —Honora, by Gallmule (Lord Dewar), I0,000gns; chestnut colt, by Buchan—Coucy, by Corcyza (Lord Woolavington), 9000gns; bay colt, by Son-in-Law —Love-oil, by Amadis (Mr W. T. Sears), 8500gns. With forfeits falling due next Friday in connexion with the 64th Great Northern Derby we will not have long to wait for the list of horses likely to be accorded the opportunity of earning honours in the classic race set down for decision at Ellerslie on January 2nd. Agrion, as winner of the New Zealand Derby, is, of course, the particular colt on whose future most attention is centred, and he is booked for the northern trip (says "Phaeton"). Satrap, who filled third place to Agrion at Riccarton, is engaged in the A. R.C. race, and as he was only sepurated from the winner by three-quarters of a length there is good encouragement for Mr J. y. Barrett to keep the Paladin gelding in the Ellerslie race. Laughing Prince was onlv beaten a head by Satrap for second honours in the New Zealand Derby contest, and the Aus-tralian-bred colt is therefore entitled to be considered as a likely contestant at Ellerslie. Paieta won the Great Northern Guineas, and he may be included among the. Derby acceptances. Ark Roynl displas'ed grit in winning the Dunedin Guineas, but he was well beaten in the New Zealand Derby. Martarma has failed so far in his race? at three years old, but quite a number of good judges hold the son of Martian in respect and recent advices frc-rh, Canterbury include him among the horses likely to play a part in the settlement of the Great Northern Derby.

TROTTING NOTES. Nominations for the Westport T.C.'s Midsummer Meeting close to-morrow, and on Friday nominations will be taken for the South Wairarapa and Gore Trotting Meetings, Amaris is an additional acceptor in the Mark Memorial Cup at the Waikato trotting Meeting. Bell Harold was nominated for events at the West Australian Trotting Association's Christmas Meeting, but as suitable shipping arrangements could not be made it is not likely that the big pacer will leave Now Zealand. 1 At the Winton Trotting Club's Meeting to be held on December 29th a sum of £l6lO will be offered in stake money. The principal event, the Winton Trotting Club Handicap, of two miles, is confined to horses that can do 4.50 or better, and carries stake money to the value of £3BO, including a trophy valued at £3O. r Trenand, who, when racing in the colours of Mr F. E. Sutton, showed himself to be a most consistent performer, has been purchased by W. J. Tomkinsort. For some time Trenand was trained at Lauriston by 0. E. Hooper, but. at the conclusion of the recent - Meeting at Addington he was left in F. Holmes's care. Trenand was purchased during the course of the Forbury Park Meeting last week, but delivery was not taken until after the Meeting. >n the meantime Trenand enriched Mr F. E. Sutton's banking account to the extent of 60 sovs — third place 1 money in the Forbury Handicap on the second day. W. J. Tomkinson's team has also been strengthened by the inclusion of Dalmeny, purchased from Mr H. A. Jarden by the Dunedin sportsman, Mr G. J. Barton. Dalmeny is a younger brother to Dalnahine, and, like his relative, was bred in Southland by Messrs Stevenson and McMath. Dalnahine has proved a real bargain, and Dalmeny gives just as much promise of doing so. Tom Thumb, who has been handicapped to do 4.29 in the Mace Memorial Handicap on the first day of the New Brighton Meeting, is engaged in the Auckland Cup. This race is for horses that have done 4.31 or better for two miles, but the limit will be 4.28 Talaro, Sea Pearl, Queen's Own, and Great Bingen filled the places in last year's Auckland Cup, and all with the exception of Queen's Own figure in the nominations for this year's race. The tightening of the limit in this race from 4.30 to has had the effect of reducing *.ie number of nominations as compared with last season, but this should be all in favour of even more interesting racing. Twenty-one nominations were received last year, as compared with sixteen on this occasion. Dalnahine, winner of the two principal events at the Forbury Park Meeting last week, is not engaged at the New Brighton, Wellington, or Auckland Meetings, and his next appearance will probably be in the Canterbury Handicap, of 1100 sovs, two miles, at the Canterbury Park Meeting at New Year time. This race is for horses that have done 4.30 or better. When he won the Forbury Handicap on Saturday last Dalnahine was handicapped on 4.27 and registered 4.28 4-5 Dalnahine did not give the impression that he was fully extended at Forbury Park, and must now be reckoned amongst the bestclass horses in commission. TRAINING AT RICCARTON. The weather was favourable for training operations at Eicearfon yesterday, and the tracks were in satisfactory order, despite the previous rainfall. Most of the fast work was done on the trial grass, and some fast times were recorded. Th, first half-hour of the early morning gallops was, as usual, confined to reverse work, and the majority of the trainerß due to make the Auckland trip took advantage of tho arrangement. Mason's large team were out, but were not given serious tasks. . Childsplay hopped off from the winning post to the four : furlong post, cov-

ering the half-mile in 48 2-5, with apparent ease. Paper Boy was not fully etxended to register 1.18 for six furlongs the reverse way, while his stablemate galloped seven furlongs comfortably in 1.38. Rapier and Centrepiece were not out to register fast times in a six-furlong task, the concluding half-mile taking 53. Footfall was given a serviceable gallop over seven furlongs, occupying 1.36. Paper :hase's task also was not of a serious nature, five furlongs being traversed in 1.8. "ronlv Rank, assisted over five furlongs by Green Cloth, gave a pleasing display by striding over seven furlongs in 1.32. The above completed the reverse work. Count Cavour's time for a mile journey was 1.4G 3-5, the last four furlongs taking 52 4-5. Money Order reeled off six furlongs alone in 1.16, the best gallop over the distance. Satrap covered four furlongs in 52 3-5, Martian Spear and Lancer occupying 53 2-5 for the same journey. The two-year-old Merivale easily beat Pledge over four furlongs in the good time of 49 3-5. Fair Exchange took 1.18 3-5 to run six furlongs, and Silver Coot occupied 1.10 for five furlongs, neither being seriously pressedSir Roy had an advantage over Assurance after being seven furlongs behind in 1.30 2-sscc an attractive gallop. Island Fastness and Arikiwai galloped half a mile in 54, a similar performance being credited to Countersign and Rotor. Lumiuant ran six furlongs leisurely in 1.20. Miss Trillion and Malmsey finished well clear of Silk Stockings at the end of half a mile, covered in 50sec, time that was also later registered by Noteworthy and Money Mart. Arrowmir and Rina Maunga registered 1.6 for five furlongs, and Donne easily accounted for Scythia in a similar performance. Martarma and Fresco were associated over four furlongs, occupying 52 2-5. Ophir and Rascal finished on terms in the same time. Hoylake and Lady Swinton were seen to advantage in registering 1.3 2-5 for five furlongs. Bronstell and Gold Mint traversed seven furlongs in 1.35, Margaret Birney showing slight improvement on this time over seven furlongs of a mile tasK. Oriflamb (E. Shaw) gave a good display over a round of the fences, and Tenterfield (I. Tilson) and Rapid Rose (E. Shaw) also jumped well in a similar schooling effort. PURELY ACCIDENTAL. DEATH OF JOCKEY. (PBSSS A.SSOCUTIOH TELBGRAK.) AUCKLAND, November 29. The Judicial Committee of the Takapuna Jockey Club held an enquiry today into the accident during the running of the Rakino Handicap yesterday, which resulted in the death of the jockey R. H. Reilly. All the riders, with the exception of an apprentice, Bryce, rider of Look Out, together with Mr J. N. Heslop, steward of the club, Mr S. E. Langstone, ambulance officer, and a Press photographer who happened to be near the scene of the accident, gave evidence. Tho Judicial Committee came to the unanimous opinion that the happening was entirely accidental, no blame being attachable to any rider in the race.
