later-Borough Cricket. This year a thorough search is to be made of the borough' for the best plajrers to represent Sumner in the interborough cricket match against New Brighton. For this purpose trial matches have been arranged to be played at St. Leonard's square on Tuesday and Thursday next, when a team of 14 from the Sumner Club will play a team consisting of those who live' in the borough, but play for other clubs. With the New Zealand representative, W. E. Merritt and the Canterbury representative. I. M. Hamilton, in" the team. (Sumner should be able to muster a verv strong side. \ Life-Saving. The opening of the Sumner Life-Sav-ing Club will take place at the Clubhouse this afternoon. As the Provincial Surf Championships will be held at Sumner next February instruction classes will be held in the Clubhouse every Sunday for those desirous of obtaining R.L.S.S. awards, and for team training. As an addition to the Clubhouse, it has been decided to start a library. Several gifts of books nave been received. At the last meeting of (he Life-Rav-ing Club, Mr S. K. Bassett presided. In response to a letter from the Surf Association, the following officials were recommended for inter-club competition work: Judges, Messrs S. K. Bassett and G. F. Allen; marshal, Mr P. -R. Climie; time-keepers, Messrs J. C McDonald and J. Taylor. The Mayor, Mr W. Jf. Nicholson, wrote accepting the club invitation to open the new season. The Sumner Borough Council wrote granting permission to erect stalls on opening day. The North Beach Club wrote inviting the members to their opening day. The appointments of the following | beach inspectors were made: Messrs S. Chapman, H. Buttle, F. J. Glaokin, A. T. Bolam, J. S. Kite, S. K. Bassett, J. M. Ealcs, and J. Hawker. Presentation. The members of the W.E.A. Class this week entertained Mrs Fife Slater at the residence of the secretary, Mrs R. King. Mr J. Johnson, the tutor, in a brief speech, referred in very kindly terms to Mrs Slater's connexion with the class, and on behalf of the members wished Dr. and Mrs Slater a very beneficial and pleasant holiday. As a token of many good and sincere wishes he asked Mrs Slater to accept from tho ladies of the class, a copy of Masefield's poems, in a monogram suede carrier, as well as Galleon's Reach (Donn Byrne), and Haugman's House (Tomlinson). Mrs Slater acknowledged the gifts very feelingly and said that Sumner days had brought many friendships from which she found it very hard to part. She thanked sincerely for their gift and good wishes and expressed a hope that the class would continue to flourish. Afternoon tea was provided. Amongst those present were: Mrs Adamson, Mrs E. Brown, Miss Bilton, Mrs C. S. Booth, Miss Booker, Miss E. Barber, Miss Bain, Mrs F. C. Cother, Mrs T. F. Chambers, Mrs Hardey, Miss Gates, Mrs G. Gosset, Mrs Todrey, Miss Jones, Mrs R. King, Miss Kilner, Mrs J. Longton, Miss A. Pender, Miss Prosser, Mr Twomey, Mrs Saunders, Mr 3 Taylor, Mrs H. Thompson, Mr and Mrs J. Johnson, Miss Saunders, Miss Willett, Mrs Waller, Nurse Overton. An apology was received from Mrs F. Barber. Adult Education. A very pleasant evening in the Cadena Tea Rooms concluded tho season of the Sumner Branch of the W.E.A. There was an attendance of about forty, and Mr J. H. Thomas presided. At the invitation of the branch, Professor J. A. Shelley gave an address on the "Modern Drama." At the close Mr P. J, Toomey expressed the appreciation of the Sumner W.E.A. towards Professor Shelley for his visits to the borough and moved a very hearty vote of thanks which was carried by acclamation.
