OBITUARY.
MR A. F. J. ASHBOLT. The death has occurred of Mr Alfred F. J. Ashbolt, second son of Mr George Ashbolt, of Armagh street, Christchurch. Mr Ashbolt was born m Christchurch and was educated at the Normal school. He has had a roaming career, wandering around most parts of the world. Before 1914 he was a member of the Royal Garrison Artillery, and saw service in India. He subsequently returned to New /lealand, but later left the Dominion with the Fourth Reinforcements, and was wounded on active service. A NAVAL VETERAN. (FBI9S ASSOCIATION TBLKGBAH.) GORE, November 24. An old warrior of the British Navy who took part in historic engagements of the past generation died in the Gore Hospital in the person of Samuel Ellis, aged ninety-eight years. Mr Ellis joined the Navy as a boy. He was present at the storming of the Heights of Alma in 1854, the taking of Odessa, the fall of Sebastopol; saw the charge of the Light Brigade; participated in the events of the Indian Mutiny, being at the relief of Lucknow; saw service in China and West Indies, and was one of a party which escorted the ill-fated Emperor Maximilian of Mexico to his castle. After further adventures, ah epileptic fit led to his discharge. Mr Ellis came to New Zealand in the seventies, after over thirty years in the Navy, ultimately settling at Ferndale, near Gore. There he worked as a rabbiter. He retained his faculties to the last. He will be accorded a military funeral. MR J. J. KNIGHT. (BY CABLK—PBBSS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) ' (AUSTRALIAN AND H.Z. CABLB ASSOCIATION.) (Eeceived November 24th, 8.25 p.m.) BRISBANE, November 24. Mr J. J. Knight, managing director and formerly editor of the "Brisbane Courier" is dead. [Mr John James Knight was born in Staffordshire, England, in 1863, and came to New Zealand in 1874. After working in the office of the "Bruce Herald" he returned to England in 1880 and assisted in the establishment of the "Staffordshire Knot," a paper run in the interests of trades unionism. Coming out to Australia in 1884, he joined the staff of the "Brisbane Courier" and rose to be managing director and editor-in-chief. He was Queensland's representative on the Imperial Press Delegation in 1918, and on his return lectured extensively on Britain's part during the war. He has published several volumes on the early history of Queensland.]
