UNUSUAL LICENSING CASE.
1 DEFENDANT'S REMARKABLE CLAIM. (PBEBS ASSOCUTIOM TILIGEiU.) HASTINGS, November 23. There was a sensational ending in a Court case to-day heard before Mr Mowlem. Three charges were preferred against Donald Hugh McLeod, licensee of the Hastings Hotel. They were: (1) Of opening his premises for the sale of liquor after hours'; (2) of selling liquor to Athol Griffith; and (3) of selling liquor to an intoxicated person. Arising out of the above charges Athol Griffith was charged with being on licensed premises after hours. The four charges were dealt with together. Defendants pleaded not guilty. After evidence had been given by the police as to the finding of two bottles of beer on Griffith, the latter, in his evidence, stated that the bottles contained tea and not beer. The case was then adjourned for an analysis to be made of the contents of the bottles.
