SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
♦ REMITS FOR SOUTH ISLAND CONFERENCE. The School Committees' Association met last night, Mr G. P. Purnell presiding. The Minister for Justice (Mr Rolleston), replying to the Association's representations regarding prosecutions of committees promoting Christmas hampers, wrote that it was the duty of the police to prosecute when breaches of the law came under their notice, and it was not a matter in which he could interfere. Mr A. Scott, purchasing agent for the Auckland School Committees' Association, wrote that several of his circulars had been sent to Canterbury School Committees before he was aware that the Canterbury Association had decided to embark on a scheme. The secretary reported on the progress made with the scheme, and 6aid that already he had received Beveral offers of supplies. Proposed remits for the conference dealt with: (1) Dispensing with the forwarding to the Board of voluntary contributions when the money has to be refunded to the School Committees; (2) protesting against the increasing tendency of the Government towards centralisation and bureaucratic government; (3) protesting against the Department's withdrawal of all subsidies in respect of the installatibn of up-to-date heating systems; (4) that where teachers applying for any, position are graded within three marks of each other, and in the opinion of the Board the other qualifications of the applicants are of equal merit, the Board shall send the names of such applicants on to the committee for final selection. No. 1 remit was amended by the addition suggesting that a certificate, signed by the chairman and the secretary, that the money was in 'land, should take the place of the present system. It was decided to forward the following as a remit: "That inspectors should submit a report of the results of the school's work for the year, for presentation at the annual meeting of 'flers, such'report to state whnt the school excels in. what it is lacking in, and any suggestions the inspector think would effect improvement." The other remits, after some discussion, were agreed to. It was decided to ask the conference to reaffirm certain remits agreed to at the previous conference. The following were elected the Association's delegates to the conference: Messrs G. P. Purnell, H. Odell, and T. W. West. It was resolved that a letter of con'nlence be sent to Mr John Caughley. whose wife was killed recently under tragic circumstances. Reference was made also to the doath of the late Mr Justice Alpers.
