EVOLUTION.

10 THE EDITOR OP THE PBESS. Sir,—Seeing that we cannot get something out of nothing, evolution, regarded as a grocess of unfoldment—from potentiality to actuality—must necessarily have been preceded by a prior process of involution, or infoldment, and, further (if the "law of cause and effect" holds good here) we will have to posit behind these two complementary processes, an adequate first, or eternal "cause." Now, what are the factors involved in this interesting process? These may, perhaps, be grouped under three heads, viz., matter, energy, consciousness. Science affirms of the first two "indestructibility," but what of consciousness? Matter, • relatively passive, is moved by energy, relatively .active, which in its turn may be, and is, controlled and directed by that relatively superior power, consciousness. If matter does not become less than matter, energy than energy (appearances to the contrary notwithstanding), is it reasonable to assume that consciousness becomes less than consciousness? —Yours, etc., T.E.B.
