As Egan and the lady were going out of the room, witness turned round. Later, when she looked for her bag, it was missing. She had notified the police. Mrs Edith Taylor stated that she had been with Egan during the day, and they had visited several hotels. The last one she remembered entering was His Lordship s. She had seen Mrs Edwards, whom she knew by sight, in the room. To Mr Sargent, witness stated that she had been short of money for some time. In the morning she had had 6s, which she had borrowed. Later, in ■the day she had 16s, which she stated Egan had given her. Police evidence was that, as the result of information received, detectives had visited Egan's rooim, and had made a search. Mrs Edwards's bank-book was found underneath a mattress. , "Accused will be convicted, said tho Magistrate. "All I can say is that Mrs Taylor is a lucky woman. Two people go into an hotel and get drunk, and a theft is committed. It would be difficult for the Court, to decide if it were not for the evidence of the detectives and Mrs Edwards. I doubt very much the evidence of Mrs Taylor, but there is sufficient without it.' ...,'. Egan was convicted and fined £2, in default 14 days' imprisonment, Bnd was ordered to pay the amount of the property stolen.
