RANGIORA. The euchre tournaments continue to prove popular. At Monday night's session the prize-winners were:—Ladies, Miss M. Wheeler 1, Miss R. Greig 2; men, Mr A. G. Huunibell 1. Mr H. Lander 2. At a meeting of the Fire Brigade held on Monday night a letter was received from Mrs C. H. N. Clarkson thanking the members for the hospitality extended to the visitors on the I occasion of the concert given by the I Kaiapoi Male Choir. The application of the tennis section to have better protection against lost tennis halls in a divisional line fence was referred to the Grounds Connnitj tec with power to act. The tennis section asked for a ruling on the question of the use of the pit courts, as the present asphalt courts were congested. It was decided that the tennis section have full control of the pit courts. The chairman, on behalf of a debenture holder, applied for the repayment of her debenture of £7. The request was granted. The treasurer's statement showed that the bank debit balance was £66 Os 3d. The monthly meeting of the Northern A. and P. Association was held yesterday, Mr Colin Mcintosh presiding. The resignations of Messrs J. S. Watt, Henry Barker, and D. S. Bradiy were received and accepted. Mr J. W r aller applied for support in his application for a veterinary practitioner's certificate. It was "decided to support the application. Messrs H. Mcintosh and \V. Smith reported that they had attended the meeting on the breeding of draughts. Thcro was very little done, as it was too late in the season to do anything on practical lines. The chairman said it was the general opinion that it would bo some years yet before the tractor wholly replaced he horse and it was necessary that farmers should! bo encouraged .to breed draughts by assisting them with good stallions. As ■a result of the propaganda good work had already been done, as quite a number of farmers were now breeding horses who otherwise would not have done so In reply to an enquiry from Messrs Pyne, Gould, Guinness, it was decided to inform them that the date of the next annual show would) be the first Friday in November. Mr J. E. Strachan wrote enclosing application from two Christen urch High School boys for work on farms during their holidays. The matter was left to any farmer requiring such assistance to make application to the bovs concerned. The lyiiapoi Technical School wrote making application for the annual grant. It was decided to vote £2 2s. On the application of Mr C. 1. Jennings, chairman of the Rangiora High School Board, a contribution of £5 was made to the agricultural department of the High School. The secretary presented a balancesheet of the recent show, with comparative figures for the previous year. OXFORD. A meeting of the General Committee of the Oxford A. and P. Association was held on Saturday, when the President (Mr A. Baxter) presided over a crood attendance of members. The chief business of the meeting was the revision of the Show schedule, the recommendations of the various sectional committees being accepted. Judges, also, were nominated. But few alterations were made on the schedule of last year, OHOKA. A social was held at the residence of Mr Johnson, when about 30 residents met to say farewell to Mr T. Harkness, who is leaving to take up a higher position at Clyde, Southland. Mr Harkness was the recipient or a fountain-pen, and Mrs Harkness ot a pair of bronze vases. The children also received a present each. Mr Harkness commences his new duties on November 28th,

WAIAU.

At the annual meeting of the Waiau Croquet Club the annual report and balance-sheet, the latter showing a credit of £5 lis 9d, were adopted. It was decided that the annual subscription should be 10s, and for junior members under 16 years of age, os. It was left in the hands of the committee to arrange for the opening day, and to attend to the work of putting the green in order. A vote of thanks was passed to -Mr A. Neilson for the use of his shed for the storage of Material. Officers were elected as follows: —Patroness, Mrs P. Morse; president, Mrs R. H. Chapman; vice-presidents, Mesdames H. Dampier-Crosslev, E. tf. H. Burbury, H. Limn. W. Harold Atkinson, D. C. Macfarlane. and Messrs J. Macfarlane, and A. Neilson; committee. Mesdames C. Cone, F. C. Cole, W. Jelfs. F. C. Forbes, H. W. D. Rogers, and Miss Wilson; captain, Mrs Forbes ; secretary; Mrs Rogers. After a break', of a fortnight the Amuri Cricket Sub-Association's competitions were continued on Saturday afternoon. The Culverden and Waiau senior teams met on the ground of the latter The visitors batted and knocked up 136 runs for six -wickets, and then declared, Waiau was disposed of for 78 runs. For Culverden Grim wood 38, not out, Crothill 34 and Powell 19, batted best, while S! h. Rutherford 34. Chapman 20, and Gorton IC. were the only ones of the Waiau team lo reach double figures. Wall and Powell were the most successful of the Culverden bowlers, whilst O'Kane obtained the best average for Waiau. Playing at Culverden, the Culverden juniors, a greatly improved team, defeated the Waiau juniors by 140 runs to -50. The Rov. J. H. Thompson, Presbyterian Minister of the Kennington charge. Southland, and for ten years minister of the Amuri charge, took the services in the Presbyterian churches in the Amuri, on Sunday. For the past few weeks most changeable weather has been experienced, and agriculturists ' and pastoralists would welcome a spell of fine weather. The frequent rains are sadly retarding shearing operations, which is disconcerting to both flock-owners and shearers. Crops are coming on well, and feed is exceptionally plentiful, hut is rather too luscious ifor stock to derive the full benefit.

SEFTON. A euchre party organised by the Kowai Sports Club was held in the Sefton Rink Hall. For the men's prize Messrs George and Fred James tied, and. in the play off Mr G. James won. Mrs C. D. Petrie won the lady's prize, and Mrs L. McGowan the second award. The mystery prizes went to Mr F. Scott, and Mrs J. Champion. During the evening Mr J. Ashworth jun. presented the secretary, Mr A.' J. T. Withellj with a leather travelling bag for himself, and an cak dinner wagon for his wife.

The Rev. W. T. Brabyn, who has been attending the Presbyterian Assembly in Christchurch, paid a visit to Sefton on Sunday, taking the services at Ashley, Sefton, aud Broomfield. The visit was much appreciated by the congregations, who have grateful, memories of Mr Brabyn's ministry amongst them a few years ago.

The committee of the Sefton Public Library mot in the reading - oom on Monday evening,' Mr P. J. Thorne presiding. The secretary was asked to send a letter of thanks to the_ Kowai County Council for their action in bridging the concrete channelling opposite the entrance of the library. The librarian's report .showed 478 issues of books for the past _two months. The income ..for.-the period was £2 4s i ! d. being 23s subscriptions, 14s 9d for papers, and fines :6s 6d. Twenty-four hew books had. been put into circulation since the. last, meeting. ..The bank balance at the half year- was. reported to be £3B 10s lid. It was decided to place blinds on the west side of the library room. The committee decided to forgo the December meeting on account of the holidays, and to meet on the. last Monday in January. The weather has been very unsettled during the past few days, and shearing operations have been partially s.ispauded. The crops have improved wonderfully and are looking well. Recently a very pleasant time was spent at "The Terrace," the residence of Mr and Mrs J. J. Gallagher, the occasion being the coming of-age of their daughter, Eileen. The evening was spent in dancing and card games. Miss Nellie Danielson supplied the music, extras being played by Misses Rinaldi and Mockett. Mr W. Hoban was M.C. After supper, # Mr W. Mockett addressed the visitors, and Mr H. R. Davidson then proposed the health of Miss Gallagher, the recipient's father replying. Another toast was also proposed by Mr J. W Black, "Mr and Mrs Gallagher." The speaker said Mr and Mrs Gallagher were among the oldest of the Culver*den settlers, and besides being good neighbours, they had been worthy residents, helping with everything for the welfare of the district. MOTUKARARA. The silver jubilee of the Motukarara Presbyterian Church was celebrated last Sunday evening, when a large congregation assembled. It was very fitting that the first minister, Mr Barton, was able to bo present to conduct the service. Jn his sermon Mr Barton gave a very iinpresive and able address, at the conclusion of which a congregational supper was held to celebrate the occasion. After supper the- Rev. F. Robertsou, on behalf of the parish, formally welcomed Mr Barton back to the district. Mr F. Miller also spoke on behalf of the residents, particularly for those of 2-5 years ago. Mr Barton was greeted with applause as he rose to reply. He dwelt for a time on the occasion when he first came to take charge of the circuit, after arriving in a, horse and gig all the way from Dunedin. and called to mind -many interesting and humorous incidents during his sojourn here. He then gave some reminiscences of his life up to the present time.

An invitation ha§ been extended to all to join the local Bible Class in its first annual picnic. The Lincoln Class has already combined and the outing t-.kes place' next Saturday in the form of a tramp to the Kaituna Rest House. A small programme of sports has been arranged.

SPRINGSTON SOUTH. At a meeting of the Springston South Amateur Sports Gala, Mr P. J de la'Cour presided. .. The Domain Board wrote granting the use'..of the domain on. Sports I)ay.. Donations-were

received from the Duiilqp Rubber Co and Sir R. Heaton Rhodes. Mi P. V. Bailey was elected as a starter. The following handicappers were appointed: —Running and cycling, Messrs D. Ryan, B. Hutcheson, H. Hoskms, M. F do la Cour, assisted by officials from the Canterbury Centre New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association; motor boat events, Messrs S. J Irwin, F. Keetley, F. Pratt, with power to add; rowing and swimming, Messrs C. dc la Cour and A. R. Harris. A 440 yards handicap, a casting competition, and. a putting the shot contest were added to the programme. It was decided that the three mile cycle race bo called the gala wheel race and that a cup valued at £5 5s be given as first prize. It was agreed that entries for the principarcontests close at 11 a.m. on Sports Day. The newly formed Dramatic Society has decided to give a concert and dance in the Memorial Hall in aid of the hall funds. A feature of the evening will be a comedy-drama entitled "A Mere Man."

There was a good attendance at the weekly euchre party and dance at the Memorial Hall in aid of the hall funds. The prizes were won by Mrs G. Duff and Mr W. Bennett.. Mr L. Everist supplied the dance music. Mr S. Bennett was M.C.

SPRINGSTON. A euchre match between teams representing Lincoln and Springston was played in the Public Hall and resulted in a win for Lincoln by 90 points.. The proceeds go towards the gymkhana funds. After supper a dance was held, Mr R. Wall supplying the music. Mcsdames W. Greenslade and J. Benny, jun., contributing extras. Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Miss Mary McKay and Mr W. Brown and Mr and Mrs F. Jones respectively. Mr E. Neale was M.C.

At the weekly euchre tournament and dance under the auspices of the Gymkhana Committee, the prizewinners were: Ladies: Miss Trott 1, Miss M. McKay 2. Men: Mr Kirkland I, Mr P. -Wilson 2. The dance music was supplied by Mr R. Wall, jun, whilst Mesdames P. Riordan, W. Greenslade, and J. A. Benny, jun., contributed extras. Mr E. Neale was M.C.

HORORATA. A long spell of cold, unsettled weather is being experienced. Rain either falls or threatens almost every day, while very low temperatures are being recorded. The damp and the cold, together with the absence oi> bright sunshine, are having a bad effect on both crops and stock. At a meeting held. at the vicarage final arrangements were made for the fair to be held in the local hall at the end of the week. The stalls will be in charge of lady members of the church, and the side-shows will be organised by Mr Payne. Mr Rutherford is acting as treasurer.
