ENGLISH PARK STADIUM.

CtfOfcMO AND MJNN*NG. An interesting and, at times, thrilling programme was presented to an improved attendance at English Park last evening. The officials are to be congratulated on the expedition with which events were decided. The' public were kept interested throughout the evening, and showed their appreciation enthusiastically. The chief event of the evening was a threemile motor-paced handicap. These races were most exciting as competitors attained speeds up to thirty-seven miles an hour. The following were the results:— Half-mile Open Handicap—First heat: A. J. Archer (80yds) 1, TV'. Mackie (scr) 2. Time, 61 l-ssec. Second heat: J. Henderson (15yde) 1, L. M. Sibley (120 yds) 2. Timo, 61sec. Third heat: C. S. Shaw (85yds) 1, F Flanagan (35yds) 2. Time, 61sec Fourth heat: C. Bright (20yds) 1, W. W. Crofts (70yds) 2. Time, 60 l-seec. Fifth heat: H. McCarthy (85yds) 1, A. C. Walker (100 yds) 2. Time, 61sec. Final—J. Henderson and A. .T. Archer (a dead heat) 1, W. W. Crofts 3. Time, 60 4-ssec. Henderson rode a well-judged race from the fifteen yards mark, to catch and dead-heat with Archer in a hard finish. Half-mile Amateur Cycle Handicap—J. R. Robertson (45yds) 1, B. Howard (70yds) 2, V. R.. Blackburn (85yds) 3. Time, 63sec. One Mile Open Handicap—First heat: C. Austin (85yde) 1, S. A. Jordan (40yds) 2. Time, 2min 20 l-Sseo. Second heat: A. J. Archer (160 yds) 1, M. P. Leathern (30ydB) 2. Time, 2min 9 1-Csec. Third heat: W. Mackie (scr) 1, J. Henderson (20yds) 2. Time, 2min il 4-ssec. (Mackie was fined five shillings in this heat for looking round.) Fourth heat: L. Archer rode a good race from the limit, but tired in the last lap, when Mackie, who had been riding easily, made a good effort and came away to win by several lengths from Jordan. Novelty Event —One mile Tandem pursuit race: W. T. Weir and H. Burnand 1. Time, 2min 10 4-osec. 880yda Flat Handicap—L. Winder (55yds) 1 F. Large (35yds) 2, L. Shields (30yde) 3. Time, 2min 4 1-osec. Two Mile Scratch Race—W. Mackie 1, M. P. Leathern 2, J. Bearman 3. Time, 4min 23 2-ssec. Three Miles Motor-paced Handicap—First heat: C. Austin (225 yds) paced by L. .T. Scuffol 1, W. Mackie (scr) paced by E. Marra 2. Time, smin 7 2-59ec. Second heat: W. T. Weir (250 yds) paced by L. J. Scuffol 1, E. Condon paced by W. J. Holland 2. Time, smin 13 1-osec. The final between Mackie, Weir, and Austin will bo decided as a five-mile race on Saturday evening. Next Saturday's SporU. The North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union will continue the c-eries of sports meetings at English Park Stadium next Saturday night, when the following programme will be run: Half-mile open handicap, one mile open handicap, two miles scratch race, half-mile amateur handicap, 440 yds flat handicp. The final of the motor-paced handicap will also be run ofi over five miles. Three riders will take part. The entries rlose to-morrow.
