FIRES.

PARTIALLY GUTTED. WEST LYTTELTON SCHOOL. Considerable damage was done to the West Lyttelton School by a fire which broke out at an early hour yesterday morning. At 6.45 smoke was seen issuing from the building and the alarm was given, first on the West Lyttelton fire-bell and then on the Fire Station bell. When the brigade arrived they found that some residents had got an emergency reel into action and were doing good work in keeping the tire in check. The building was weil alight, however, and the brigade found some dimcuitv in getting to the seat of the fire. After over an hour's hard work the fire was subdued. Two rooms were bad.y gutted, these oi Standards 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. The fire had evidently started in the latter room, in the centre of the school, in a large library cupboard. Little damage was done to the other rooms. The origin of the fire is a complete mystery, as no one had been in the school since Friday afternoon. The* children were given a holiday resterd&y, but it is expected that they

will re-assemble to-day. A large marquee has been erected in the playground to accommodate those classes whose rooms have been destroyed, and new desks and forms will arrive to-day.
